FAE and SGFC questions
    #13524906 -

Hey all,

Well I have a sgfc that can be viewed in the link below. It has been built as close to spec as I could have as per the guides around here. I have half of it filled with perlite and I am thinking I have FAE issues.

SGFC Pic: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/mypersonalpics/sgfc/gr0w/n0v5/9572a33e.jpg

Issue: If I mist and fan and come back 9 hours later, the walls of the FC as well as everything inside is still wet and the top of the cakes are still also moist. The hygrometer inside is still wet. I do fan after a misting for about 30 seconds and I fan so hard I can see the walls of the FC flexing a little and loose vermiculite being blown around. I also fan at random times if I remember. I would say I mist about 5-6 times and fan atleast 10 times a day.

Today I checked the cakes that have been in the FC for a week now and are showing no signs of pins are starting to get fury where they are sitting on the lids of the jars that sit in the perlite and are all wet underneath the cake

Here is a pic of an old cake and you can notice first of all the very small harvest as well as all the moisture on the temp gauge: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/mypersonalpics/sgfc/gr0w/N0VI5/9a69f12b.jpg

RR says a major pinning factor is water evaporating and it seems that my fc's water is evaporating at a very very slow pace if at all.

Am I having issues or is this all in my head?

If it is an issue, what can I do to fix it and get some FAE in there?

I open my window during the day to hopefully get a stream of air going through but it makes no difference if the window is open or not.

Thanks

Try running a fan or hepa filter in your room on low, and maybe just mist them three or four times a day.

I don't open offsite images, but I suspect if you're seeing condensation in a shotgun terrarium, you're heating it somehow.  Is it sitting on a heating pad or something?  Normally, when you mist a shotgun terrarium, the walls will be dry within half an hour, and you should never see condensation. . .ever.

Hi all,

I didn't realize you people didn't click external links. I have uploaded the pic and will attach to this message.

magnumzero - I tried a fan yesterday and it didn't do much. I didn't point the fan at the FC but close to it and it was the same.

RR - I am not heating my FC in any way shape or form. The room temp is around 70F and at night probably around 68F.
I assure you within 30 minutes my cakes are still just as wet. I misted at 6:30am and returned home at 5:30pm and the tops of the cakes were still wet so I only misted a touch but fanned alot. Since then I have been fanning every 30 minutes and they are still very wet and my temp guages aren't even visible as I have to wipe the moisture off.

I don't have a draft through my place and it's sort of too cold to keep the window open more then a cm or else it gets too cold as it's around 41F outside.

Any ideas?

Attached are the pics

So does anybody have any ideas on how to increase fae?

A question - did you dunk & roll?

Yes I did. Dunked for 24 hours and then rolled in fresh vermiculite. Light is on 12 hours a day and when I fan, I take the top off and use that to fan.

Sorry for double posting - Also - you have a LOT of perlite in there, 3-5" is sufficient. Do you have holes drilled in the lid AND the bottom?

Yeah I had about 3" of perlite and people told me to add more so I did and now it seems to be around 5-6" all around. I still had the same issue with 3" of perlite though. I have holes about every 2.5" on all 6 sides of the FC and you can see it is sitting on on some glasses about 5 inches from the ground.

You should be fanning before you spray, try that.

The fruiting chamber will still be wet all day. I haven't misted since about 5:30 and to vermiculite on the cakes I dunked last week are all moist as hell and touched the top of a cake that has no vermiculite on it is wet. The sides of the FC are always wet and for me to read the RH meter or the temp guage, I always have to wipe off the water on it.

I have a fan blowing right on the fc right now for 15 minutes and I am going to see if that does anything.

I think I would take some of that perlite out, but they look good, Though. they dont look overly wet or anything. Are they second or third flush cakes?

How much perlite would you take out? They do seem to look ok except my yeilds are very small and the white fuzzy stuff that suggests low fae is all over the stems of the mushrooms. Also the RH meter and the walls of the FC are always wet and never dry up.

2 cakes are on a 2nd flush with no vermiculite on them and all the others have been in there for a week and a half and yet to show any pins.

i think your setup is ok. be sure the perlite is always wet and spray the cakes once every day. could use the half of perlite, will be easy of manipulate.

ya really only need about 3 inches of perlite, any more and your being wasteful. That stuff gets expensive. But it wont hurt any thing to have it that deep.It dose take up a little of your chambers growing space.
Do you have 1/4 inch holes every 2 inches in your tub? Thats what is generally recommended. Looks like you got a bunch, but i cant really tell. So you are 10 days or so into the first flush and no pins, I would pick them up, and if they feel very light, I would re dunk them. If they feel heavy, fat and plump, you wouldn't need to re dunk, By looking at them they seem dry. what I used to do was after jars are 100% colonized, I would take the lids off, and set the whole jar inside the fruiting chamber, And allow them to start a nice pinset inside the jar. Then i would berth them, and dunk the cake with little pins hanging off of them. That would give me a monster first flush.

Hey and thanks for the response.

I added more as a recommendation from the forum. It's only about $4 a bag so not too expensive.

I am going to show a pic at the bottom of this. Basically there are 2 cakes that already had a harvest and they were redunked and then put back in and they have no vermiculite on them. Then there are 4 cakes I dunked and put into the FC last week on Tuesday and they are all showing nothing and when I pick them up, they all feel very light. Then there is the cake with some mushrooms and that one was dunked and put into the FC on Nov 10th and is just now at this size.

** In the pic, if you can see below the cake with the mushrooms, on the lid is all this moisture. That basically never dries up and always stays there. Thats a sign of bad fae correct?

The sides of the sgfc stay wet all the time as well as my humidity meter and temperature gauge. The vermiculite on the cakes are always wet on the 4 that were put into the FC 1 week ago.

It's hard to say if I am doing things right or not as people are saying it should take 30 minutes for the cakes to dry up when it's taking me hours. I wish I had more experience so I would be calmer but it seems that my yields are small and I am not fanning enough. Even putting a high speed fan on the FC for 30 minutes does not dry it out as it still basically just as moist.

I am going to re-dunk the 4 cakes that I dunked last week and see if that helps. The 2 cakes that already gave been harvested I am going to leave for another few days and the cake with the mushrooms, I am going to harvest and then dunk and put back into the FC

Well I dunked the cakes. One of them had about 3 little mushrooms on the very bottom. I wonder how it expects to find it's way to the top.

So when I am done dunking, do I do a roll or not?

sure you can. Alot of folks swear by it. Also I wouldn't expect massive harvest off them cakes anyway.  Cakes can only do so much, But I have grown some big mushrooms off cakes. I would expect to get around 4 gram dry weight per flush give or take a couple grams, and that on the good end. I have never gotten more than 3 flushes off of cakes. With cakes you get a big first flush, and smaller flushes each flush after.
