Ebay UK doesn't carry anything like that so I didn't even think of checking the .com version  :facepalm3:

As far as I understood things to be the cristate forms of cacti are not genetic.  They form from by chance or possible damage to the growth tip.  I believe that it is still not fully understood why some cacti choose this growth habit.  Which is why Kada recommended planting lots of seeds as it is possible that one may sprout and then exhibit the cristate growth form.

Isn't it caused by a virus?  Couldn't the virus be transferred from another cristate / crested plant?  Is cristate / crested the same thing...  Check with your cactus and succulent society.  they should let you know.  It might be a plant viral thing I think that is the current consensus on the issue.  I don't know if the plant virus crosses species that well though.

No one really knows for sure what causes cristate cactus, there's some ideas, but it has not been linked to a virus to my knowledge.

Usually a cactus grows from a single apical areole but with cristate cacti this areole elongates and instead of getting growth from a central point you end up with many points in a horizontal line that continue to grow causing that unique growth we all love.


A couple of theories suggest a natural mutation or damage to the apical areole either by mechanical damage, insects or disease. No one has been able to reproduce this in the greenhouse so they're propagated by division of already cristate specimens and by the mass planting of seed in the hopes that one of them will turn out to exhibit the cristate habit which are then grafted to speed up growth.

MOD EDIT: Source discussion is against the rules of this forum and the type of talk in this post will only add to the rareness of these plants as the powers that be continue to clamp down on them. Everything is obtainable if you look hard enough. Spoon feeding the masses is not the way to ensure these plants continue to be available in the future.
