Washing Grain in Antibacterial soap

A friend of a freind was thinking about washing her Rye Berries in a light antibacterial soap mixture and then rinsing several times before sterilising the grain in jars. I tihnk this will leave a residue that might be harmful to the mycelium, but I don't know.... someone explain what the results of this would be. If it can be done, is it a good idea?

1. Whats the point? If its getting pressure cooked, what is on the outside of the grains is of little worry.

2.Soap + Boiling Water = Room flooded with suds rivaled only by a Tom 'n Jerry cartoon.

Probably not the best idea, but hey, we learn through experimentation. Make sure to watch the PC!

The soap WILL leave residue, and could possibly keep spores or mycelium from growing.

A much better bet is to soak the grain in really hot water, and add in a tiny bit of bleach, and let it soak in that before rinsing and straining. Or perhaps dump in some H2O2 and letting it soak for a while.

The prevailing wisdom about grains, especially Rye Berries is that soaking it overnight causes the endospores in the grain to germinate, thus making them more suseptable to being sterilized in the pressure cooker. Bacteria and contams on the outside of the grain are already easily sterilized, its the bacteria and endorspores inside of the grain that might survive pressure cooking and therefore need to be weakened (So to speak) by soaking (And bleach or H2O2) before PC'ing.

The method that my neighbors hooker uses when preparing birdseed or Rye berries (And she hasnt had any problems due to this method...just cantams due to 'dirty' spore prints) is this:

Get a plastic bucket.
Put the WBS or Rye Berries in the bucket.
Fill the bucket with the hottest tap water. (Or dump in some boiling water)
Let that sit for an hour or so...occassionally stirring it up to make sunflower seeds float, then scooping off the sunflower seeds.
Then run more water into the bucket, the grain should stay in the bottom of the bucket, and the 'stuff' should be rinsed out, overflowing over the edge.
RUn hot water into the bucket again, let it sit.
Add a little splash of bleach, or H2O2, and give it a little stir.
Let it sit like that overnight, or for a couple of hours.
Run more water into the bucket, while stirring the grain around, let the water run until it runs clear.
DUmp the bucket out, grain water and all, onto a screen, or colander (With small enough holes that the grain wont go through, just the water)
Let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes untill it is entirely drained.

Now it is ready for putting into jars and PC'ing.
