Hey fellow shroomers!
I dont have any antibacterial soap so i was wondering if i could just pour some rubbing alcohol in my palm and rub it all over my hands? Of course i would wash my hands with regular soap first...
Thanks! Fd

I've sprayed my hands with lysol before when I didn't have any alcohol or antibacterial soap around. I didn't get any contamination in my agar petri dishes so I think it worked. The chemicals are probably not good for your skin though, and it dried my hands out.

Remember though that when using rubbing alcohol, you allow 5-10 minutes for it to work. Contrary to popular belief it isnt instant, it takes a few minutes for it to work. The rubbing of the skin right before a vaccine is more for piece of mind rather than sanitation. By the time you have finished getting the shot, and walked out the room, then the area is sterile. So if you use alcohol, give it at least a few minutes. One of the best methods is to buy your self a pair of kitchen gloves and after putting them on soak your gloves with lysol spray, which is instant.bluhoney

There was this kid who lived in the dorms on the same floor as me and he was fucked up in the head somehow because he would always spray his hands with lysol and shit. Well anyway it fucked up his hands they were always red, swollen and peeling. I guess he some kind OCD, he didnt like germs on his hands. But his room was fucking filthy. And the lysol shit was the only weird thing he did.

Oh just to let you know lysol is not instant to sterilize. Here is the back of the can:
To disinfect: Hold can upright 15 cm to 20 cm from a precleaned surface and spray 2 to 3 seconds until covered with mist. ALLOW SURFACE TO REMAIN WET FOR 10 MINUTES. *To sanitize: Let stand for 30 seconds.
I didnt put the "ALLOW SURFACE TO REMAIN WET FOR 10 MINUTES." in caps because i wanted to make a point i put it in caps because its in caps on the can...
So if you really want lysol to sterilize you gotta wait 10 mins

So neither alcohol nor Lysol sterilize surfaces instantly. Huh, I didn't know that. How about H2O2? Diluted bleach? Iodine? My hunch is none of them are instantaneous. You probably need to wait for them to evaporate before they kill all of the bugs. H202 woudn't be too bad for your skin if used occasionally. You can put it on cuts after all.

I use alcohol as well and I just get a bit of skin peeling off my palms that`s all. Then again, MRs palmer is a hard working lady hohohohohoh.
I`ve never experienced any problems with alcohol, let alone the fact that it lasts soooo bloody long, evertime I use some I could swear the level hasn`t decreased?? strange but true. The thing with most air sprays is that you need to wait atleast 15 min for the particles to settle firstly and then also to sterilise. So be Patient and learn to relax and wait A bleach solution works well but it`s not as good for your skin as say alcohol. I find it dries my hands out 10x more.

You have to think of the hidden repurcussions of alcohol sanitation... The germs on your bodyreach a sort of equilibrium, when you use alcohol on your hands or arms, all the germs are killed, like a giant forrest fire and a miniature scale... Now, any germ can take it's place, and even though the equilibrium will be re-established soon, it just seems like this short time of vulnerability isn't worth it... I can't explain all the disadvantages, but I will tell you that putting on gloves and using alchohol or lysol on them is a GREAT idea... I usually don't even wash my hands with soap, unless they're greasy and then I might use soap (I sometimes just use a papertowel, tho) Call me unclean or whatever you want, I don't mind bugs crawling all over my body... If I really did care, life would be so much harder.

If you have long finger nails (like me!), then using gloves also becomes a non-option....lots of nasties under your nails.

if you really want to be anal (those there is not much reason to), you can pour straight bleach over hands. it easily destroys the membranes of ANY bacteria. it wont do you harm...it just makes your skin soft and sensetive for a day (not in a bad way), baecause it pulls dead skin cells off. As a matter of fact, if you have been exposed to poison ivy really bad, pour bleach over that area as soon as possible. it washes away the dead skin along with the poison ivy oil before it has a chance to react and blister.

Don't do this when you can just wash your hands/arms and apply a little 70% isopropyl, ideally with nitrile gloves on.
This is a rough draft of an unfinished TEK but it largely focuses on the use of bleach and what can happen if you mix it wrong, etc:

Washing your hands with soap and water then a rinse with iso once you're in the box is plenty functional and safe. Don't pour bleach on your skin.

I wouldn't recommend putting either on you hands. Use gloves cause it can fuck the healthy bacteria on your skin especially if you do work regularly.
If it's for work in a SAB I use gloves and spray them with Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleaner Spray 500ml
but any type of anti-bacterial cleaner bottle will do. and it worked just as well as rubbing alcohol has
