washing old jars?

Hey guys, one question I could not find the answer to in the guides was how do I clean/prepare an old jar that previously got contaminated for another try? Or is this job taken care of in the sterilization procedure?

Wash thoroughly with soap and water. That's it. Some people will advocate soaking with bleach, but I personally feel that it's overkill since sterilizing will kill any present bacteria.

i put my jars through the dishwasher from time to time. i do one run through with a splash of bleach, then a second run through with regular dish soap. but of course, this is after scraping out any big chunkies of shit in there

I'm one of the extremists when it comes to cleaning contaminated jars.

I take the contaminated jars outside...so I don't spread contam spores threw out my house.

I open the jar and dump it into a plastic bag...then dump the jar into a large rubbermaid with bleachy water.

I leave the jars in that for several days.

Then wash them really good with some soapy water...then run them through my dishwasher.

And I'm good to go!~


Some people just throw the contaminated jars away...
I'm too thrifty(cheap)(scotish) to do this...I don't like to waste jars.

Rust is not an issue.

For non mold-contaminated jars - I just scrape out the insides of the jars to remove any stuck on gunk, and throw them in the dishwasher - same thing I'd do for something I was going to eat off of.

Pressure cooking kills pretty much everything. There isn't a need to be meticulous about the pre-PC stage, except for properly preparing your substrate.

Is rust ever an issue like when its around the drilled holes? I mean after a couple of months, that shit gets brown. It also gets cleaned and then PCed so I dunno.

No. Rusty lids and holes aren't an issue at all MushroomSmoothie. I use my lids until the rust gets bad enough to were holes in the lids from rusting could be an issue. LOL!

Agreed. I use the metal lids upside down with a synthetic filter disk on the outside. I only toss the lids out when they get so rusty the metal can't seal around the glass. Until then, they're fine.
