pointed torward the cieling, it releases steam. Pointed horizontally it holds pressure. You dont mess with it except leave it open (pointed up) until steam flows through it for a good 7 minutes (venting air inside), then flip it horizontal to build your pressure. Dont release the pressure by throwing the valve open while its still hot. Just let it cool and it will actually hold a vacuum after its cool.  You will have to flip the control valve before opening it to release the vacuum.

Well the needle on the gauge went all the way up to 20 psi but it will probably get stuck at 5psi on the way back down.

Hey Damion,

Without a gauge you will not know if the unit reached
max pressure when it begins to release steam.

(I was thinking that you know the pressure when it
begins to automatically release pressure, but without
a gauge you will not know if the typical levels were reached)

...sounds like a gauge is mandatory.

I got another question for all you guys if you know the answer.

My 25x like I said gauge was at 5psi.  So I turned it on it got to 20psi and stayed there for about 30 minutes.  So I turned it off it then cooled down and I looked at it the gauge said 0.  So then I lifted the control valve up to release the pressure and the gauge went back up to 5psi but all the pressure cam out so what do you guys think the gauge is shot..  As far as I can tell it worked well.  Just need a new gauge.

@hyphae  From what I read any all american will last you a life time.  And most if they do break down have replacement parts for cheap.  I am not sure about the heating element though.  My 25x looked really rough when it got here it is all beat up but it worked so now it is my new baby.

I spent 80 dollars on my 23qt presto. It works amazing. Heats up to 15psi in 15 mins. It is very quiet. I don't understand the fuss of spending 400 dollars. Can someone explain? Is is just a way to compensate for the size of other things?

Because prestos are cheaply made chinese product.  I also use to use a presto 23 quart PC, but they are cheaply made and will not last you a long time.  All Americans are american made obviously but are made of better material and are better crafted.  I mean look at the thickness of your presto and the aluminum in the all american is about 4 times as thick.

Forgot to mention in most cases with a little care and love an all american will actually outlive you.

I have had mine at for at least 200, 65 min cooks. i don't see any wear on it so far. It gets to a point, that it it not necessary to even worry about anymore. It's like CD-R disc that last 300 years. Don't get me wrong, If i had the money I would buy an 75x All-American, for the capacity and the lack of need for a stove.

$554 including shipping for All-American 25x

$79 including shipping for Presto 23qt

Extra $475 for a longer lifespan?

I got a better idea, Buy 7 Prestos for the same price, less $1 for a Double cheeseburger. I bet 7 prestos would last longer.

That being said. Enjoy. Not trying to be a dick, just typing my thoughts.

But hey, yours has a built in heating element. imho that's just more stuff to break and wear out over the years.

An on/off switch, a dial switch, a capacitor, ect?
These components are easy to find and replace.

Have you ever used an electrical steroclave before?
If you have, you would find that these electrical components make these steroclaves cheaper to operate.

The AA 25x electric steroclaves are 1050 watts a piece compared to a 3500watt, 240 volt electrical range and a gas range, forget about it.
Also when running a 3500 watt electrical range to heat up your PC, the stove puts out massive amounts of heat.

If you have a summer season, during the summer this maybe a problem for you.
With the massive amounts of heat produced (for 3 times the cost of an electric steroclave) your air conditioner will be working over time to cool your house as well.

I prefer the huge AA pressure cookers without the built in heating elements. No matter what size the pressure cooker, i never had problems operating one on my stove top using one burner only.

This was my logic before research with an AA 120 volt plug in steroclave was conducted.
Almost waited a day and held out for a AA 41 quart PC for around 250 dollars.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360288536822&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1154

After careful consideration, opted to spend the extra 125 dollars to get 2 devices that would hold just as much grain as 1 device for the reasons stated above.

Not only do these steroclaves save on utilities, they are quiet and utilize the heat they produce well.
Meaning, while operating they do not produce a giant heat load on your house.

You can also unplug your steroclave from the wall, pack it in your car and take it over to your buddies house.
You can take these things anywhere there is a 120 volt wall socket and sterilize grains, if you so desire.

Re: 2 All American, 120 Volt 25 Quart Electric Steroclaves For Less Then The Price of One Thread. [Re: hamloaf]

You've almost talked me into buying myself an electric stereoclave.  The excess heat in the summer really sucks in my kitchen, which for whatever reason is cut off from the rest of the house's environmental systems.  In the winter, it's FREEZING cold and in the summer it's hot as all hell.  Running a bigass PC for 90 mins at a time really heats the place up.

Still, I've had my All American 21.5 quart PC for something like eight years now (several hundreds of cycles) and it's still working like the day I bought it, less one blowout gasket thingy which cost all of $4 to replace.  The amount of cash I'd save on utilities would take a hell of a long time to make up the cost of  buying an electric stereoclave.  Would I be able to put such a machine with the electronics and everything on my deck outside exposed to the elements, as I can do with my regular PC, or would it have to take up valuable closet space indoors?

I'm tempted... I really am ...

I am tempted too. Part of the reason I do less pressure cooking, hence less 'research,' is because it kind of kills me to use so much propane.

The electric one has to cost less--per run--for utilities, right?

I also like the portability factor.

Re: 2 All American, 120 Volt 25 Quart Electric Steroclaves For Less Then The Price of One Thread. [Re: GetHyphae]
    #13193393 -

From the statistics that were given, it would cost less per run.  I wonder how different the amount of time it takes to get to 15 PSI is on an electric stereoclave vs a PC on a stove.  I've noticed different stoves take significantly different amounts of time to heat up my PC; gas stoves seem to be the fastest, and the slowest (which I happen to have) seem to be the recessed electric ones.

It sounds like these would also be a lot QUIETER, which is really a great thing, by making a complete seal instead of using a "rocker" weight like on a PC that occasionally/constantly vents steam to maintain the proper pressure.  I imagine this would make it easier to blow the thing up, but since you would know the right setting after running it once or twice I guess this doesn't really happen?

@ spiral  My 25x came up to pressure in about 13-15 minutes that was 20psi on the gauge.  Also there is no sound.  Basically you have to watch it when it gets to 20psi you then turn the dial down some and watch to see if the gauge moves.  Once you find the setting your golden.  Also if the pressure gets to great in the 25x the safety valve will start venting steam to bring the pressure down.

Thanks for the info Damion - 13-15 mins is a good bit quicker than what I'm used to with my PC.

I think I've made up my mind hearing this; I'm going to have to flag some auctions and get myself one of these babies.
