Cultivation Techniques

O.K. I have done a lot of things down though the years, and as a matter of fact, I'm an accomplished amateur field mycologist. Picked and id' a LOT a shrooms in my time, and not just psylocibe. Anyway, that's beside the point here. I have never even tried to grow mushrooms before, other than some shiitakes once, and that was fun. I purchased a very nice All American model #925, 25 quart pressure cooker, a dozen Ball 1/2 pint wide mouth tapered jars (got the holes drilled in the tops for innoculation), and other supplies, i.e; vermiculite, brown rice flour, innoculate(s). I've read the "TEK's". Now, what I'd like is some down to earth common sense pointers, tips, whatever. What to do, and what not to do. Once I get the hang of this, then I can also do it from a field collection standpoint and cultivate strains I find in the field. That is the main reason I'm doing this. Also, if anyone here (experienced only please) is interested, I would like to get someone to write up an article for presentation at the Edot main page. An article on cultivation would be preferred, but I would accept an interesting alternative also. Sincerely, Elendil

Well, here is one of the things I don't understand. The pf TEK for dummies states: In reply to:
Put the lid on and bring the cooker to the required pressure slowly over a period of 15 minutes on a medium flame.
Query: What is the required pressure for sterilization (autoclaving) the jars/medium?

Hell, that works for me, but where are all the experts around here when you need them anyway? :D

15 psi is standard pcing temps and i use 45 minutes but some say an hour is better but i have a small pc so try to cut corners as much as i can get away with out losing everything to contaminates but with such a large pc i would go with an hour at 15-17 psi depending on your elevation

Well, All American does make two larger ones, a 30 quart and a 41 1/2 quart (models # 930 qnd 941, respectively), but I like the 25 quart because it fits a dozen 1/2 quart jars and two spacers exactly. I researched it before I purchased it. ;)

No more replies on this? I'm disappointed folks! This is the main (or should be) topic of interest at this site, and this is all the replies...?

He recommends putting your burner(stove) on a medium flame to start building pressure. If you start with a high flame you will heat up the jars to fast and they might crack.

Good one! Thanks! Spores will be here today probably. Any more suggestions? BTW: I already have my growth chamber set up and ready to go. Terrarium style with dual chamber. One for water and one for growth medium.
