A PhD in FSM
    #13128282 -

So I was brushing up on the history of the Civil Rights movement in the US and got to Dr. Martin Luther King. His PhD was in Systematic Theology.

Translation: he got a PhD in Flying Spaghetti Monster. WTF? :flowstone:

Of all the many absurdities of human endeavor, accredited divinity academic degrees must take first prize, second only to felony-illegal plants. Next we'll have masters degrees in Mud Patty Construction.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Couldn't it be compared to a history or anthropology degree?  Religion can be studied with a dispassionate or secular perspective, even if you are religious.  I dont know, just trying to think of something that can rationalize it.

Yes, exactly. It's the study of the history of the FSM.

But there is no PhD for study of the history of the Tooth Fairy or even Santa Claus. Doesn't seem fair to me.

Well, when you say it like that... But there is a degree in studying the myths and fairy tales of cultures, isnt there?

Sure. But the analog would be a Religions or History degree.

From WiKi: A seminary, theological college, or divinity school is an institution of higher education for educating students (sometimes called seminarians) in theology, generally to prepare them for ordination as clergy or for other ministry. Since at least the 4th century, there have been seminaries for the training of clergy.

These are the equivalent of degrees in rain dancing not the history of rain dancing. It seems absurd to me that one can earn a real PhD in fantasy.

I think there have probably been many PhD's written on the origin of Santa Claus AND the origin of the Tooth Fairy

This doesn't make sense.  Just a friendly stylistic criticism.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”
