"Schism" ..my understanding of tool's song

What do you guys think this song means?
To me, he's talking about the relationship between people who share love/friendships. And the morale of it is to continue to build and evolve those relationships, or the cold silence will begin to deteriorate it. You have to bring back those pieces of the relationship that you've lost and keep them to be able to grow further. He also talks about second guessing.. as I said before, doubting someone is what probably led to lying...me and Adamist agreed to this in a post somewhere..and lying is definitly the biggest burden on communication.

I think of it the same way you do. It really isn't a 'deep' song imo.  :tongue:

^^Exactly^^ The meaning of this song is very clear . . . that said, I love it just as much as any Tool song whose meaning is buried . . . if it's Tool, I love it.

the whole album is supposed to be an exploration of the relations between people. so yeah, i think schism is just about the break between two people, that occasional deep setted anger and cold shoulder that comes up.

i love tool's new cd because every time i listen to it there is always the possilbity of coming up with some radical new interpretation to fit my mood.

Although  it may not of been the best example.. I posted it because it conjures up soom images for explanation.
Ive never been big into typing explanations to other users, prefer giving words(or songs ) of advice and letting them put there own puzzle toghether! :smile:

Unfortunately, I can not share my love for this song. A radio station I used to listen to played this song to much. By to much I mean once every hour. This in itself was not bad, but the fact that it was the only Tool song they every really played caused me to became irrate. This has caused me to rate this song as my least favorite Tool song. Oh, and I certainly agree that there are much, much better and complex Tool songs.

I don't care how much a radio plays a song, you're the one who makes the choice to listen to it.
Schism makes me very emotional,
it makes me think of all the bridges I have burned and all the things that I have left unsaid,
the people who I have really cared deeply for,
yet walked away from as if it was effortless.
You can't take things back.

i read in an interview somewhere that its about the band, the lawsuit that kept them from recording for so long kinda tore em apart. i know the pieces fit cause theyre all together now.
but maynard is real big into disinformation so i may be wrong.

It means whatever you interpret it to mean. The key is to take what you think it conveys and learn something from it. You can't define a song, or tell someone that they have not looked into it enough.

It's personal, there are times that digging to deep is counter productive..
