What is it about impending human interaction * 1
    #12930806 -

That makes me nervous as fuck?

Examples...

heading to a party in which I won't know some of the guests

Waiting for a buyer from craigslist to arrive at my apartment

Heading to a laboratory class in which I will have to work with someone I don't know

But the worst of all...when I have to make phone call.  Whether its business related or girl-related, phone calls intimidate the shit out of me.

Right now I'm fretting about making a phone call to accept a job offer  Why should I be nervous?  I already got the job...but to have to talk to the head of HR makes me crazy.

can anybody relate

You are thinking of it too much. Just let it do its natural course. You're worrying that you'll create awkward conversation. Awkward conversation is inevitable. What has to be said, has to be said; plain and simple. If you need to call up the guy and accept the job, call him up and talk to him about accepting the job. It's really not that hard. It's all in your head. :smile:

But I get where you're coming from about the party thing. I can't just go up to people and talk to them, unless they're by themselves and we're doing something similar (jsut ordered a drink at a bar, for instance)

good advice tho-  let nature take its course and do what needs to be done ...... key is not to over-analyze:thumbup:

Yes, I am pretty much a recluse.

To say it's all in your head is hardly helpful.

I guess I've had some rather traumatizing experiences socially in the past that have led to my problems today. I am starting to get older and still they do not subside. I feel a huge part lies in my insecurities/inferiority complexes as well as, like you, to over-think/analyze which leads to further anxiety...Just my take on it..

As soon as you start over thinking everything instead of letting it flow and treating every moment as in the "now", you make every situation a a difficult thing. Don't think about the negative, and if you do don't get attached to that sentiment, notice its there but don't make a big deal out of it.

dude i can totally relate. Im not exactly a 'social butterfly' by no means. I have to talk to people at work, but thats while im at they're homes providing a service. Out and about, or talking to people my own age, just seems very difficult for me. When im talking to someone that seems interesting (which is rare!!! Cause i stay so quiet) im always nervous. The entire time. Also, whenever i call someone I (dont know why, personally i think its because of the weed), but i get so nervous that i fuck up what i say. Or be thinking one thing and i say something else... Then i just sound like a dumb shit. Thats one super annoying thing i wish i could personally get past.

But yea, your not alone man. Guess we just keep pushing forward and try to get past it right?

And yea i agree with him^, try not to over think it. I do that often, and i try to catch myself but usually i dont.

I can relate - I will walk up 4 flights of stairs to get to my floor at work instead of taking the elevator with a stranger.

When I get to my floor, I will stare at my phone all the way to my desk, just to avoid eye contact and akward "Hey how's it going?"s when walking by someone. Its a really long hallway, so if I don't stare at my phone, its literally a 30 second walk of staring at some random coworker.

I absolutely hate it. Luckily I have a smartphone with a good web browser, so I just browse on here all day.

And the phone thing - I cannot hardly bring myself to answer my phone and listening to voicemails is almost completely out of the question. Its like I have a phobia of it or something.

HAHA I can most definitely relate. I get extremely nervous when I'm about to go to a party full of people I don't know. But I've pin-pointed it to a phobia of bullshit. I just can't do the small talk with people that I don't know anything about. I'd rather not babble on about weather and sports.

Auto-Summary
This post provides a list of humorous and unusual things to do while riding in an elevator, ranging from making elevator-related noises and offering tracts to selling cookies and drawing on the floor. The actions are intended to be amusing and disruptive, with some potentially offensive or gross.

Fun Things to Do in an Elevator

    * Make race car noises when anyone gets on or off.
    * Blow your nose and offer to show the contents of your kleenex to other passengers.
    * Grimace painfully while smacking your forehead and muttering : "Shut up, dammit, all of you just shut UP!"
    * Whistle the first seven notes of "It's a Small World" incessantly.
    * On a long ride, sway side to side at the natural frequency of the elevator.
    * Shave.
    * Sell Girl Scout cookies.
    * Crack open your briefcase or purse and while peering inside ask : "Got enough air in there?"
    * Offer name tags to everyone getting on the elevator. Wear yours upside-down.
    * Stand silent and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off.
    * When arriving at your floor, grunt and strain to yank the doors open, then act embarrassed when they open by themselves.
    * Lean over to another passenger and whisper : "Noogie patrol coming!"
    * Greet everyone getting on the elevator with a warm handshake and ask them to call you Admiral.
    * One word: Flatulence!
    * On the highest floor, hold the door open and demand that it stay open until you hear the penny you dropped down the shaft go "plink" at the bottom.
    * Do Tai Chi exercises.
    * Stare, grinning, at another passenger for a while and then announce : "I've got new socks on!"
    * When at least 8 people have boarded, moan from the back : "Oh, not now, damn motion sickness!"
    * Give religious tracts to each passenger.
    * Meow occassionally.
    * Bet the other passengers you can fit a quarter in your nose.
    * Frown and mutter "gotta go, gotta go" then sigh and say "oops!"
    * Show other passengers a wound and ask if it looks infected.
    * Sing "Mary had a little lamb" while continually pushing buttons.
    * Holler "Chutes away!" whenever the elevator descends.
    * Walk on with a cooler that says "human head" on the side.
    * Stare at another passenger for a while, then announce "You're one of THEM!" and move to the far corner of the elevator.
    * Burp, and then say "mmmm ... tasty!"
    * Leave a box between the doors.
    * Ask each passenger getting on if you can push the button for them.
    * Wear a puppet on your hand and talk to other passengers "through" it.
    * Start a sing-along.
    * When the elevator is silent, look around and ask "is that your beeper?"
    * Play the harmonica.
    * Shadow box.
    * Say "Ding!" at each floor.
    * Lean against the button panel.
    * Say "I wonder what all these do" and push the red buttons.
    * Listen to the elevator walls with a stethoscope.
    * Draw a little square on the floor with chalk and announce to the other passengers that this is your "personal space."
    * Bring a chair along.
    * Blow spit bubbles.
    * Take a bite of a sandwich and ask another passenger: "Wanna see wha in muh mouf?"
    * Pull your gum out of your mouth in long strings.
    * Announce in a demonic voice: "I must find a more suitable host body."
    * Carry a blanket and clutch it protectively.
    * Make explosion noises when anyone presses a button.
    * Wear "X-Ray Specs" and leer suggestively at other passengers.
    * Stare at your thumb and say "I think it's getting larger."
    * If anyone brushes against you, recoil and holler "Bad touch!"
    * Ask people on the elevator if they've seen the first part of the movie Speed.
    * Push all the floor buttons. At every floor, get out, look around, mutter, ``Looks okay so far,'' and get back in.
    * Put notices in the elevators that read ``Last Inspection : Passed. Next Inspection Due : Jan 2025''
    * Use physics to determine how fast the elevator will be going if it free-falls from the top floor.
    * Countdown ``5...4...3...2...1'' and then suddenly duck.
    * Get on the elevator at the top floor and ask, ``Going down?''
    * Keep muttering, ``I hope it doesn't happen again ...''
    * Have a friend with you, but act like he's a complete stranger. After a while, turn to him and say, ``Wanna trade?'' Then promptly trade wallets.
    * Replace the 3 on the third floor button with the Greek letter pi.
    * Put on a crash helnet, and take one of those mini-trampolines into an elevator. Stand on the trampoline, then say to a friend holding the emergency phone, ``Ok, Dave, I'm ready. Let 'er RIP!'' (This doesn't quite make sense, but hey, you can't have everything.
    * Grimace painfully while smacking your forehead and muttering, ``Shut up, dammit, all of you just shut UP!''
    * Stand silent and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off.
    * When arriving at your floor, grunt and strain to yank the doors open, then act embarrassed when they open by themselves.
    * Greet everyone getting on the elevator with a warm handshake and ask them to call you Admiral.
    * Bet the other passengers you can fit a quarter in your nose.
    * Listen to the elevator walls with a stethoscope.
    * Announce in a demonic voice, ``I must find a more suitable host body.''
    * Wear ``X-Ray Specs'' and leer suggestively at other passengers.
    * Crack open your briefcase or purse, and while peering inside ask,``Got enough air in there?''

Op, sounds like you have anxiety. Have you tried taking anything to calm your nerves? I posted a similar thread about this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12822268

Believe me, I know exactly what you are talking about. I don't answer the phone unless I know who is calling...because I get too nervous. I get fucking nerves ordering a cheeseburger at mcdonalds. Forget having normal relations with people.

Try meditation first and see if that helps. Focus on your breathing. I've started taking half a valium if I know I'm going to have a stressful type situation to deal with and it always helps me out.

Its the thinking about it that makes it so awful. Try to learn to control your thoughts. It's actually as easy as that. :peace:

smartphone is the only thing that saves me in all awkward situations.

You probably don't have much confidence in your character for some reason.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

There you go. It all boils down to confidence.

We "over analyze" because of uncertainty, that uncertainty is a result of not being confident that we can handle what's ahead.

First step is realizing that EVERYONE goes through this. Very few are willing to admit or talk about it.
