It's okay to be a vegetarian, I eat three animals for every one you don't eat  I enjoy to have a spotted owl taco when I get the chance.

Why can't people just either eat meat or not without pushing it on other people?

People will always try to convince other people of their views because they believe their views are right, and they believe it is better for the world if others adopt their views.

IDK.  A lot of vegies feel like beings are tortured for the sake of pleasure for other beings.  A lot of meat eaters feel like vegies are misguided.  Or they take things personally.

Lets take a blast from the past, and see what the so called "natural humans" who lived in the wild revered and liked to show how it helped their survival:

Lots of big game...

Humans are meat eaters.  Humans have spent a fair portion of their history in ice age, when the main source of calories for any norther populations were animal fats.

Fruits and veggies are obviously needed as well, but meat is good for you.

The problem is people eat over cooked factory-farmed crap.

If you eat good meat, preferably raw, or very rare it is amazing.

Humans painted pictured of big game for a reason, its what they survived on, it is what they thrived on.

Almost every culture in the world has revered meat as a food source.

Last point, even without an ice age, to survive at a norther latitude people needed to have animals and hunt, because you can't live off vegetables year round anywhere too far from the equator.  Don't fool your self thinking you are eating "naturally" by eating only veggies. Because in the real world you need animals in case your harvest is bust you can cure up a pig for the winter.  In the "natural" world you don't have the supermarket to go stock up on bananas.

Historically, Tibetan Buddhists are not vegetarian because to live in Tibet in the winter you must eat meat.

Food for thought...

--------------------
"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

Well I stock up at the farmers markets usually, as well as grow a lot of my own food.  I am going to be getting chickens in the future and eat there eggs.  If surviving means hunting, farming, or fishing for meat I will totally do that.  I loved going fishing a couple weeks ago and eating the meat that I caught and cut up with my own hands.

Humans have weak stomachs now, they don't want to kill the animals they eat themselves.  It can be an ugly process, and we want it out of our site.

I do take advantage of the healthy foods from all over the world that I have access to, including bananas.  If I didn't live in America and had to eat meat out of necessity I totally would.

But as it stands, I can add years on to my life because I was born in America and I have the option not to support the factory farming industry.

Beyond just supporting the meat industry though, it is the entire food industry that I personally believe needs an overhaul.  By boycotting meat though I multiply the amount of food I am boycotting.  Animals have to be fed to, and over their lifetimes they consume a lot more then the calories we get from eating them.  If I am not eating meat then I am allowing those calories to be used for something else, or at least I am letting the industry know that I don't need those calories.

We live in a different world now then we did before.  I would love it if we could all hunt for our food.  Unfortunately we have billions and billions of people now (I think overpopulation is a huge problem).  If we don't watch out we will have food shortages, water shortages, oil shortages, and energy shortages.  (I forgot to mention that more water is used up to produce meat as well).  In America, the average meat eater eats about 99 animals a year.  As more countries become wealthy and start to demand the same life style that we have that would mean more and more people would be eating 99 animals a year.

My long term life plan is to move to Canada and live on a lake abundant with fish.  I will farm and have a green house, as well as fish and hunt.

But to each his own.

:potleaf:

factory farming = mostly myth

load of shit, with agriculture more water is wasted on the ground
watering crops than is actually used by the crops, water consumed by
cattle is taken in directly, most of that water comes from streams,
ponds and in some cases wells, typically crops it's drawn from rain,
rain also being water, 99% of that water becomes ground water carrying
various environmental pollutants with it, when the weather is dry
there's 2 choices, water or dont, unfortunately for the farmer, watering
comes from the same source as the water for cattle, streams, ponds and
wells and again, more than 99% of that is wasted on the ground

yes, cows consume more water than plants but we arent talking about
consumption, we're talking usage and with the usage, less than one
percent of the water used on crops is taken up by those crops, the rest
soaks into the dirt or evaporates, that's wasted water, unlike cows who
drink it directly and only a very small percentage gets wasted

the 'facts' spread around by vegans/vegetarians are often times so silly
because they dont look at the fact that most of that water from the cows
does in fact return to the ground containing Urea which is 45% nitrogen,
nitrogen being vital to the growth of plants, they also deposit many of
the calories consumed back into the ground in a carbon rich byproduct
called manure, which incidentally is also a benefit to growing crops as
well as generally improving the soil through the deposit of minerals,
vitamins and carbon...

the diets for the majority of these animals is is plain ol' pasture
grass, feeding grains is far too cost prohibitive given that feed grains
sell for several hundred dollars per ton, $8+/50lb, in the winter cattle
are often fed silage, the 'inedible portions of plants harvested and
they also eat hay, that's dried grass, they also get grains but the
percentage is small because of the cost but it helps to give added
nutrition and the carbohydrates tend to help aid the animals in staying warm

99 animals per year? would that be 99 rabbit or 99 elephants because if
that's 99 cows for that average human then that's suggesting that the
average american consumes 60,000 pounds of meat per year, that would be
in excess of $120k per person per year at $2/lb, america really is the
wealthiest country in the world

americans consume around 225lbs of meat per year on average, that's
less than 1/2 of a cow, that would be about 99 rabbits though, so
the 99/yr animals does actually apply in that instance

Meat is fine in small quantities when prepared right. I would never stuff myself with meat. I think that's what a lot of people are doing wrong. My 2 cents.

Humans have adopted omnivorous and carnivorous eating practices, but our anatomy and physiology have not changed. We remain biologically a species of fruit eaters.

Quote:
In a 1979 preliminary microwear study of Australopithecus fossil teeth, anthropologist Alan Walker theorized that robust australopiths were largely frugivorous.[10]  However, newer methods of studying fossils have suggested the possibility that Australopithecus was omnivorous. In 1992, trace element studies of the strontium/calcium ratios in robust australopith fossils suggested the possibility of animal consumption, as they did in 1994 using stable carbon isotopic analysis.[11]  Australopithecus mainly ate fruit, vegetables, and tubers.
