I can't believe I've never read Stranger in a Strange Land.. It's been on my "must-read" list for years, just never got around to it.

You're moving to Asheville? It's a great place, I have some friends there... I'll have to look you up next time I come visit.

You still plan on making it to the Shroomery gathering or summer tours?

I tried to read this book and found it incredibly boring. I couldn't even get past the first 50 pages. It may be great to some, but I read a lot of Sci-Fi and it just came off as outdated to me. You want a book to blow your mind? "Read Calculating God" by Robert J. Sawyer. There's ideas in it that will make you want to drop some acid just to think about them.

As for Vonnegut, he's good, but he's very hit or miss. "Breakfast of Champions" is one of the coolest books I have ever read. "Cat's Cradle" is great too. "Deadeye Dick" to me was funny and made me realize how much Chuck Plaininhuik rips off Vonnegut.

But yeah that "Stranger in a Strange Land" book...I don't know. Does it ever pick up or do I have to sit through basic corny dialogue throughout the whole book? I suppose my issue with it takes place in a different time and in a world where we still didn't know anything. I don't doubt it was cool when it came out, but I read Sci-Fi books based on real science all the time. Robert J. Sawyer is IMO one of the best Sci-Fi authors I've ever read. He writes fantastic stories and knows his shit so fucking well.

Seriously, I realized recently that I have not done this in forever. I am always too distracted to read a book. I always am planning things like going out, getting drunk, partying, hanging out with friends... always afraid that I might miss a moment that I may enjoy. This has literally resulted in me reading pretty close to one or two books total, in the last 4 years. Sure, I've skimmed some... read chapters of many... but have not finished one. I'm almost disgusted to say that, given that in my teens, I read voraciously. I'm talking 5-6 books a month minimum.

So today, I sat for 7 hours and read a large part of "Finding George Orwell in Burma." Very good book... good enough to get lost in. Its such a pleasure to sit down, not have to talk to anyone, and the only thing in the world is your brain soaking in knowledge from another persons experiences. I always wanted to write a book since I was a teenager, and now I have enough life experiences, even in my very young age, I would like to actually show others the world through my eyes. I feel like I cant do that, though, without rediscovering this simple pleasure...

So yeah, go out and read a book. You'll feel better for it, I promise!

wow, sounds exactly like me, too preoccupied with partying and such to remember how awesome it can be to just read all day in bed.
i remember when i discovered kerouac, i had some awesome sundays all alone just reading for hours on end.

Here is a list of recommendations of things I've read in the past year, every one of them is enjoyable imo!!

Junky - William S. Burroughs
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
The Rum Diaries - Hunter S. Thompson
Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test - Tom Wolfe
Confessions of an English Opium Addict -Thomas De Quincey
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest - Ken Kessey
the Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
Pharmacotheon - Jonathon Ott
Mycelium Running - Paul Stamets
The Metamorphosis - Short story by Franz Kafka
Every poem, short story, and book by Edgar Allan Poe
All of the Forgotten Realms series by R. A. Salvatore

That should keep everybody busy! Very good reading, especially most of the drug books.

I tend to go in phases but usually ready 1 or 2 books a week when I am on. The last book I finished was a re-read of Dune; I haven't read that book in og 25 years. I forgot how awesome it is!

I miss reading. I cant read with another around. Being in a relationship, work, and life leaves me no time. I havent read a book in 3 yrs now. I miss reading sometimes.

Nothing like some dank and a good book!

That is not even a possible combo for me, I just can't read stoned. If I smoke, I "read" while my mind is wandering and realize one page later that I can't remember a word of what I just read.  I always smoke after the days responsibilities are done; I love reading, but I am forced to do it right when I wake up before heading out for the day.

I just finished the Plague by Camus and am now reading DMT: The Spirit Molecule.  Both are great books

Well, my library didn't have "Cat's Cradle," so I'm reading Jailbird right now by Vonnegut.

No idea how this is, but definitely find "Cat's Cradle" and discover the awesomeness of ICE NINE!

I just finished Huxley's Brave New World. I thought it was pretty good, though I don't know if I'd reread it. I love reading books that really relate to society. Drawing parallels from fiction to reality is something I love about reading and it is what keeps me going back for more.

I'm about to head out and pick up Burmese Days by Orwell, inspired by the OP's original post.

reading = :psychsplit:

I'm going to have to re-read BNW soon... it's been like 10 years since I last read it.

It's great to tackle books again, with a different perspective. Same with movies.. you can pick up on so much that you might have missed the first time around.
