What books are on YOUR bookshelf?..............
    #1434207 - 04/06/03 07:55 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I'm very stuck up about the books that I read. At least that's what my wife tells me.
I've recently acquired a set of 5 Vonnegut paperbacks on e-bay for $6.00 from one of our Canadian friends. Great bargain!!!

Here's a sample of MY reading material:

Camus
Sartre
Huxley
Menander
Keats
Shelly
Byron
Plautus
Racine
Euripides
Moliere
Aeschylus and Racine

I do enjoy some Sci-Fi now and then. Mostly Arthur C. Clark.

There's no other material posessions in my life that I cherish more than my books.
My wife tells me that I'm TOO serious a reader. She loves all those mystery novels.
I thumb my nose at her, naturally in jest.

I'm curious to know what our fellow community members read.

I only like art books.

I'm pretty obsessive about books as well.

I have countless books. From Buddhist philosophy to bio texts, to Orwell, Tolkein and Asimov all the way to Stamets.

Huxley's work is difficult reading. I tried read "The Genius and the Goddess". Most went over my head. I'll read "Ape and Essence" next. Maybe I'll have better luck.

the most difficult book i have read (you will see why, it's not technical, it's fiction) is House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Not at home but know I have Whitman, Asprin, Adams (douglas), Salinger, Vonnegut, King, Cook (robin), Burroughs, Thompson, and many more.

I see that many of us are into existentialism, ie; Vonnegut, Sarte and the like. My passion is ancient literature. My first few books were Sophocles and Euripides. I've since worked my way up through history. A few years ago my wife bought me a complete, illustrated Shakespeare. The books almost 2000 pages! I know it cost her a small fortune. It's the battleship of my bookshelf

Try reading James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. I haven't gotten past the first page, and I'm fairly certain that I'm not alone...

I have a bunch of psych texts, Hunter S. Thompson, Brett Easton Ellis, Erica Jong (only really liked fear of flying) bunch of astrology and art books mostly on expressionism, some craft books - crochet, rug making and weaving, some true crime books, and a bunch of biographies -eg lou reed ('growing up in public' - good read), janis joplin, nick cave, john lennon. My favourite book is by Helen Garner - Monkey Grip. None of her other books are any good IMO so haven't bought any others.
