In depth discussion on diet and nutrition & healthy lifestyles
    #12893444 -

I know healthy eating and living habits is a topic that has been heavily discussed on these boards before, but i thought it would be cool to have a refresher thread for anyone else interested in changing up their diet, the way they feel on a daily basis, and so we can all just throw good positive ideas around.

Recently i've quit eating much meat, i've started eating a LOT of fruits and veggies, reducing sugar intake, and i generally walk at least three miles a day. for the most part i feel great. i no longer over indulge, i give my body what it needs and no more. probably like three months ago i started to become more aware of how my eating habits were affecting how i felt and i decided that i wanted to treat myself right, because i'm beautiful! (cheezy i know, but it's true, we are all truly beautiful and unique and we should treat ourselves with respect)

Okay, so my mind is kind of scattered right now, but i'll start with this. lately my breakfast has consisted generally of a fruit smoothy made up of oats, a little peanut butter, some whey, milk, and a cup of fruit. blueberries, strawberries, mulberries, banannas, etc. i've also started drinking green tea which i really enjoy. i also take turmeric daily. besides that, i try to consume a lot of fruits and vegetables, some nuts, and like i said, excessive consumption of meat or any fast food no longer appeals to me..

now i'm no nutrition expert by any means, which is why i created this thread. i'd like other people interested in adopting a more healthy lifestyle to be able to give and receive feedback in this thread, and i'd like to expand my knowledge on the subject

i'll add more when i feel so inclined. thanks for any replies in advance guys

"Breakfast" - 3 eggs w/ Frank's hot sauce.  Eggs tend to give me a good energy boost in the morning.  Unfortunately, I hate the taste of eggs but I find the benefit to be worth it.  My nutritionist said that bread w/ peanut butter would be a good breakfast too.  I might give that a try soon.  Cereal makes me crash mid morning so I tend to shy away from it.

Lunch = 2 sandwiches (Boar's Head Cajun Turkey) + 1 orange.  1 glass of milk.

Dinner - Tuna/spaghetti/fish/chicken/beef usually with an orange or some other fruit and a large amount of broccoli.  1 glass of milk.

1 handful of cashews / peanuts every 2 hours to increase caloric intake.  I should be accompanying this with a fruit or vegetable but haven't as of late primarily due to laziness.  I tend to have meat quite regularly because I need the protein.  Now that I'm not smoking I've started working out and it feels GREAT!  Tryin to get some guns.  :piratebattle:

I supplement with 1 multivitamin, 1 fish oil, and 1 5-htp when I'm feeling down.

At this moment in time I don't have much to add except that I have started making my grocery store trips a lot healthier by shopping the perimeter of the store only.  Fresh fruits, fresh meats, fresh breads, fresh dairy.  Leaving all the prepackaged and frozen meals in their place.  I don't think I've lost any weight or anything but I feel like I am eating better, healthier meals.

Now if only I could stay out of the soda pop aisle too...I'm hopelessly addicted to diet coke still.  It's terrible.

Is there any nutritional difference between fresh vegetables and frozen vegetables?  I sometimes have trouble finishing a whole pack of fresh veges before they go bad and frozen + steamer bag would be pretty convenient.

There is probably some vitamin loss but if you prefer frozen it is better than none at all!  I for example eat frozen peas and asparagus, I prefer them to the fresh produce.

I am actually eating more than less, I have been training and slowly gaining weight for over the last year.  I started at 143 pound and now am at 163 pounds

I don't exactly understand this point of the thread/why I'm posting but
carbs you get most of your energy from, they're 4 calories per gram
protein=4 cal per gra
fat=9 cal per gram

Just eat 30-40% carbs
30-40% protein
and the rest healthy fats
for your diet.

I pretty much eat all day long.  Eat more meals= better metabolism.  I've been doing somethin right, I've been complemented on my physique twice in the last week now

I don't want to endorse one diet or the other here, but folks who include a wider variety of items in their diet, use two or three extra items in the soup, two or three extra spices/herbs in the dish - be exploratory and keep yourself well rounded.
That to me seems to be the attitude with which you can approach diets and foods better. We don't always have the time or energy to make a rembrandt or picasso of a dish, but every time we do we are putting good things in place as well as micro nutrients we don't need much of, but would miss.
Of course lots of greens, veggies and fruits are important, but you really double up the value of your dishes fast treating yourself to the nicer faire and being your own gourmet.
Some redly red table wine (or white as appropo..) and some 65% or darker chocolate for desert is nice too, yes?

Taking a moment to sprinkle some cinnamon (if you like that) on those pear slices increases their health value to you
Adding another fresh veggie to that sub, or some extra garlic on that pasta - the little things give us more than we often realize.

Nutrition is a wide topic for general discussion from which we can take various scientific facts to explore this field, but where especially personal experience and testament always plays a central figure, since we all do eat, right? In essence our biology is certainly designed to eat a certain way, but we are also highly individual. Sex, age, body type, which already creates unique genetic factors, the climate and natural environment one lives in, level of physical activity, other subtleties yet undiscovered, all these set the conditions which can make the difference between my and your ideal dietary choice. So in that respect I think that not only is everyone directly responsible for their health and longevity, which should be obvious, but also it's everyone's job to explore what is right for them, and actually undergo the personal journey of trial and error which will ultimately lead one to discover the language of one's own DNA, to know what makes you feel vibrant and true to God healthy, rather than what just merely sustains you..

This is IMO the mistake of standardizing diet, take the standard American diet for instance, or the typical food pyramid which we've all seen on the side of cereal boxes and public school classrooms, which is really just a sustenance model, not a guide for a healthy lifestyle. There is no one hat for every head, just like there is no one person who is just like you. So even while taking in all the health science out there, I would still continue to value what my body tells me more so than the scriptures, as long as they don't clearly conflict with another. My personal journey to leading a healthy lifestyle has been one of shaky commitment for a very long time. I used to read a lot and only occasionally put my findings into action. I would let myself become too influenced by habit and the habits of culture, which really only lead me down a mediocre road. Something recently switched on within me, as most times in life, unexpectedly.

Today I eat nearly 80% raw and unprocessed fruits, greens, and vegetables and the way it's going right now I aim to increase it up to 90% by the end of the summer. I cannot cease to repeat how much greens and especially the blue-green microalgae spirulina have increased my energy levels while at the same time decreasing my caloric intake. This has also caused me to begin to question the century old model of calorie requirements for the human body, but I do not wish to jump to any conclusion at this point, only that I feel that a new paradigm of nutrient density lies somewhere unwritten in the works..

A couple of tips just to share, take what fits your shoe

- Drink out of a huge freaking glass. Yes, size it up. I drink my water, tea, and smoothies out of a 1 liter mug. Water is so so vital, sometimes I still try and wrap my head around this fact. People today just simply do not drink enough liquids. Increase the size of your glass, and you increase the amount of water you have available to drink. Just do not drink this much right before or after a meal. Give it an hour space. Nobody benefits from diluted digestive juices. Drink immediately in the morning as you are most dehydrated at this time of the day. I manage to check this by drinking my breakfast.

- Make meat a kind of luxury. This may prove difficult for some who view meat as a cornerstone of their diet, but there's plenty of evidence out there showing that the human being is not biologically built to be carnivorous, he just plain isn't. This doesn't mean that meat will not sustain, but it's too easy to become excessive with it, and that's when meat becomes a really big health issue. A large population of the technological civilizations suffers greatly from this, disease statistics alone show this. Try to consume meat in small servings when it is available, but do not actively seek it out. So at family dinners, social events, things like that. On anybody's road to the best attainable health possible, cutting meat out of one's diet will always be a very significant turning point!

- Inspire yourself! Make a calendar. Create a piece of art that is your eating style. Align yourself with a mission, and set out in small steps. Big breakthroughs will come, but probably only spontaneously so out of your control. Long term gains will reveal themselves based on all the small steps you took to get to where you are!

That's all I got for now. My body's telling me it would love a banana. I think so too. :1up:

I'm like you, I like it raw. My breakfast daily consists of, dried figs and bananas and then some in season fruit. Right now it's strawberries. All OG of course. I drink a huge green smoothie for lunch that is so green sometimes it almost looks black. For a backbone it's parsley, dandelion, wheat grass, spinich, and blue green shit.

Then I snack on raw carrots and cabbage and apricot seeds.

Dinner usually has some cooked beans with raw avocado and hot sauce.

Occasionally I have meat, usually chicken steamed or liver or steak almost raw.

uhh there's 'probably' some vitamin loss? Do you even know what a vitamin is?

If anything, frozen vegetables are healthier - they are flash frozen when ripe, while 'fresh' items bought from the store often travel long distances and spend time in trucks/boats before they are seen on the shelves. This applies to fruit as well.

Don't fall into the trap of overcomplicating diet.

Eat only when you are hungry until you are satisfied (not packed full)
Try to eat something green with every meal
Eat a variety of fresh foods, avoid processed things as much as possible

...
profit! If you follow this and exercise most days of the week, you will be healthy, and you will live longer than those who don't. (this is proven).
