Re: Car troubles - adjusting idle and timing [Re: Maverick]
    #12845265 -

OK - i just changed out the spark plugs. the 3rd cylinder was badly fouled.

However - now the car is running as always before, no shifting or acceleration problems.

It is however, blowing a small amount of blue smoke (not visible to me when i am driving, but apparently noticeable to an outside observer. It is only minor though.)

My step dad thinks that the rings are burnt or the valve has warped slightly and that will foul the plug every so often. He suggested keeping a plug and tools handy and to top up the oil every time i get gas, and to switch out the plug when i start to lose performance. Judging by the small amount of blue smoke, he thinks the amount of oil getting through is pretty minimal, and it will take quite awhile before i have to switch out the plug under normal operating conditions.

I am thinking about selling it before things get worse. I should be able to get what i paid for it, although i'll lose $500 or so in maintenance i've put into it. However, i am relying on it until Mid August anyways.

The internet suggested that code 25 and code 26 was a problem with the o2 sensor...

So i am considering having that changed and getting a minor tune up done by a mechanic, before my road trip next week.

What do you all think about this?

EDIT: it seems to be idling normal too.

those codes tell you that either your throttle position sensor, oxygen sensor, or map sensor is bad.

your dad may be right, if one plug if fouling it's more likely valve seal letting oil by

Nice! I'm glad you were able to get a quick, temporary fix for it.

Totally.

I was surprised to see that the check engine light went off by itself when i started up my car tonight.

I don't feel comfortable with my mechanic - he wanted to charge me $60 for a diagnostic alone, and then 120 to swap the fuel filter :O

So i am going to do a couple hours highway driving and see if anything comes up ... if i can get away with avoiding the mechanic, i will.

Picked up some fuel injector cleaner too.

I'll let you guys know if anything else comes up.

Thanks so much to everyone who chimed in.

Find another mechanic. Seriously 120 to change your fuel filter? Nah.

And if it's an rx-7, that's a wonderful price!  I know it isn't, and be glad it isn't.  Those fuckers you gotta take practiaclly the whole rear of the car apart to get to.

I'd clean the injectors then see if that doesn't fix it along with an ECU reset after the cleaning
