dont die on me dell
    #12796569 -

i think my laptop is on the brink of death after 3 years.
just started fucking up. it just stutters when i do anything, like
if i move the mouse across the screen every second it stops briefly. same thing if im watching a movie (which is impossible) sound judders and picture jumps and freezes. i dont get it ive tried everything i even resorted to restoring it to factory settings:sad: im worried its going to end up flying out of my window in a second:sad: its pretty fucked anyway, missing like 8 keys and needs a new battery.

It's most likely just your HDD.  If that's the case $70 or less will get you back up and running.  Jittery video and lag are definite red flags though.

its like it has parkinsons disease, clicking anything is a major task. i dont really want to spend anything on it, was basicly free only had to pay £150 for it and they sent me 2 by mistake.

Yeah I'd say trash it then.  Don't turn it on anymore though if you want to save your data.  Get a cheapo transfer cable (or cradle) from newegg or ebay and pop the drive out then hook it up externally to your new PC or another one just to keep the data safe.  The more you power it on, the worse the HDD will get.

does that go for all computers?

in any case, what would u say is worse for ur computer: keeping it on for long periods of time or shutting it down often (once every one or two days)?

My laptop cost 700e two years ago and it's making a constant loud buzzing/humming noise,it overheats and it turns itself off.

The fan has already been replaced. What can I do here? Gets so hot that I can smell burn and then it turns off but the humming/buzzing continues for a second or two after it's off, like it's ticking over.

That goes for anything with a HDD in it, and I'm only talking when it's already started going bad.  In emergency cases you can usually freeze the HDD for a few hours then plug it in and try to get as much data as possible, kind of like a one shot recovery deal.  Once it starts writing bad sectors it won't stop, it'll gradually increase and eventually it gets to the point where the system won't even detect it anymore.

I leave my computer on all the time.  As long as your HDD is in good health there's no real harm in doing so.  I do monthly incremental image backups in case of failure.  Usually a catastrophic data failure only happens once.. then you learn.  :smirk:

how do you keep a HDD in good health?

Make sure it never incurs any impact damage.  That's all you can really do.  It's not a matter of if it'll fail, it's when.  I use Western Digital drives, they seem to last me a looong time.  You'd be amazed that HDD's last as long as they do if you've ever seen the inside of one.  That write head, (the thing that looks like a record needle) sits nanometers (thousandths of a meter) above the disc's surface; it takes one good jarring to set it off track and writing bad sectors for the rest of its usable life.

Yeah but IMO it's poor laptop design.  They KNOW people are going to be carrying it around, they should design them smarter.  I've noticed on the newer Toshiba models if you even slightly bump the laptop a dialogue box comes up on the screen saying, "Sensor has detected harmful movement, write head is being moved to a safe position" or something along the lines of that.  They're taking a step in the right direction with that kind of technology.

i dont know how much they cost ( pricey im sure) but the toughbook series is pretty rad...all the cops and fireman around here have them mounted in their vehicles.
