damn laptop pixel burnt out!

yeah all of a sudden I notice this little black speck on the screen and I think it's dirt but it turns out it's on the inside! So I call in the warranty service and you know what they tell me? They say there has to be at least 14 pixels burnt out before they'll fix it!! what a crock of shit!

the warranty says "warranted to be free from defects in workmanship" it doesn't say warranted to have very few defects, ya know what I mean? :thumbdown: it says "free of defects"

so, what would you guys recommend? if a pixel is burnt out it would mean replacing the entire fucking screen right? that, I assume, is why I imagine they don't wanna fix it. I know that shit's gotta cost a fucking fortune.

I figure I can:

- challenge the company's deceptive warranty in smal claims court (toshiba)

-figure out a way to make 13 more pixes burn out, and then get them to fix it

- fix it myself and pay big bucks

-say fuck it and try to ignore the stupid burnt out pixel

I'd really rather get the shit repaired by those bastards, so again, any suggesions if you were me?

I've read that most of the major laptop manufactures have rediculous pixel numbers before replacement. Some of then have either a total number (like 14) or a smaller number in the central viewing area. They also have different numbers for pixels that are stuck on white, red, green, what have you.

no, stupid me decided to save money and I didn't get the accident coverage.

Well, how could I best create another "defect in workmanship" ? Maybe if I shake the fucking thing really really hard without actually causing any exterior physical damage I could crash the hard drive or something. please help me brainstorm some more.

oh and about how much does a laptop screen repair cost if you pay for it yourself btw?

also,  on closer inspection I notice a few more pixels that are dim but barely noticibly. Still they are defective, but so far I have only about 5 bad pixels even counting the dim ones. I hope some more burn out quickly.

What's the story with the pixels and laptops anyway? Is this some kind of commonplace occurance? I wonder why they can put a man on the moon, but they can't manufacture reliable laptop displays :nonono:

It's actually common w/ LCD screens in general. It doesn't happen to standard CRT monitors but it's one of the drawbacks of LCD.

hmmm... i guess i'm lucky... i have had my laptop for 4 years and my 19" tft for 2 years and no defective pixel whatsoever... hope it stays this way... on the laptop it wouldn't bother me that much, but i would get seriously pissed if i had a burnt out pixel on my monitor...

hahaha yes, well I just learned how to take a LCD screen out of a laptop. there was a tutorial on a website that sells replacements. It says "call for price" so I'm not sure yet what it's gonna cost, or if I'm even gonna get it at all.

I could always remove the LCD screen itself and then short it out with undue electrical surges to it's circuitboard components. If they somehow figure out what I did I could always just tell them to fuck off and send me my shit back, and then replace it myself with a new LCD from one of those discount online suplpliers. I'd be gambling a waste of shipping and handling against a free replacement.

Fuck I figure the bastards owe me, I mean why the hell won't they fix it when it has a totally annoying blackened pixel. Now I'm curious who the LCD screen manufacturer is toshiba or someone else. I'd have to remove it to find out. :mad2:

probably made by someone other than toshiba. 

a replacement would be big bucks.

if they are like dell, just send them tons of emails and complaints and eventually they will give in.  when my laptop was under warranty I copmlained about every user replacable part so the would send me new ones.  I have extra parts for a laptop now.  need a cd burner :smile: ?

I've really got to get into laptop repair. "everyone" knows how to fix desktops, hell most people build their own. but how many people know how to fix a laptop?

I wonder how easy it is to replace other things like hard drives and cd/dvd burners? I have a dvd burner but I would definately love to lose the 60GB HD and put in a 100+GB one.

I wish I had some old laptop I could take apart. Anyone know a site where you can learn how to self-service your own laptop?

i work at an electronic retail store and anytime someone buys the warranty for a laptop and their pixels start going out, the company just replaces the laptop as its way too expensive to just repair the screen by itself. i'm interested to see what the price quote is if you were to call that place.

I hope so because I have a standard warranty, but it's good for 3 years. Hopefully a bunch more will sizzle out within the next few months.

I'm gonna call for a quote tomorrow though and post it here.

How is it deceptive? The pixel burned out after you bought it, that's not a manufacturer's defect.

Don't try to fix that shit yourself. Laptops are very touchy little devices, and those screens are expensive as hell. I always recommend to friends that they get an extra warranty on laptops cuz it's just so much more to fix that if anything happens the warranty usually pays for itself. Keep pestering the company and keep complaining about the burnt out pixel(s). You might get to somebody who will help you eventually.

go back up to my first post. My laptop is warranted to be "free from defects" for 3 years. yet it is not free from defects, it hasn't been 3 years, and they wont do anything to fix it. To me that = deceptive. :shrug:

I have never taken apart a laptop, but I'm gonna try to find me a totally broken one somewhere to dissassemble.

The warranty is for 3 years, so hopefully my LCD will fail some more during that time and eventually I'll be able to get a repair. I'm gonna call that screen manufacturer after I have my coffee.

and I mean this is bullshit because it's not just a dim pixel or something, it's a highly noticible blackened out pixel dead center vertically, and 2 inches from the right side on a 15 in screen. That puts the little fucker right there to annoy the fuck out of me. It looks like someone poked a hole in the screen with a needle.

Bro, chill out.
Broken pixels will fix themselves in a few weeks time.
There is no need to go through all that trouble of calling anybody to fix it.
Just be patient and you won't even notice that one day soon it is gone.

buried in the warranty is probably an arbitration clause in some state far away so small claims probably will not work.
