Best Laptops for college?
    #3959986 -

What would you guys recommend for someone going to college? I've heard good things about Toshiba but I really have no idea which company to go for.

I think it's another way of saying a cheap laptop for writing papers and whatnot... which could be an infinite number of laptops.

Just look for something that has what you need, for a reasonable price, eh? We don't know what your major is or what you'll be using it for.

if you're going to be writing papers and such, get the cheapest one
you can with 512 megabytes of RAM. Processor speed is NOT
important for you.

If you're going to be performing VERY complex calculations (like finite
element analysis, et cetera) for an engineering or science degree,
you'll want a beefy CPU in addition to your RAM. More RAM is always good for you too.

edit: Always make sure you trust the brand. A cheap laptop is very
different from an inexpensive laptop: the cheap one will
disintegrate within a year.

dont buy a dell. by purchasing a dell you agree to their spyware, and once you reformat or install a new version of windows you void your warranty.

My dell rocks as long as you consider that it is purely a college computer. I can't play anything more demanding than doom legacy, but It was cheap ($850) cause I got it from their refurbished pc auction. refurbished means used and fixed all up like new again. it works like a charm dude and it's purty and clean. I had mine since 1/29/04. That's 14 months. It's a nice little thing to have, i'm tellng you.

check it out. just don't break your pc's hardware, or you're fucked. but as far as software support goes they're good people. There's a live chat tech support that's wayyyy nicer than phone support.

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/segmenter.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dfo

there's a home and an education section. I didn't even notice that the business section was also "education." I guess check em both out. Please don't make my work finding that link and recommending this shit a waste of my time. check it out. refurbished dells are cheap enough that you can just use em till they're trashed and then throw em out.

and about the guy above and the spyware and the warranty. fuck it, delete the dell auto updater if you want, it's not really detrimental, but i did it. there's no warranty on a refurbished laptop anyway. fuck warranties, this thing was so damn cheap! I bought a nice laptop bag for it and I'm good to go. it's never gonna break. I even dropped it twice while it was naked.
