Laptops

So as a graduation present my dads gonna get me a laptop. I get to pick it, and although there isnt a clear cut price limit, i probably cant push much past $1800.
Any suggestions? I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to laptops and such, and have no idea what the good ones are, what difference the processor speed things will make etc.
Since im going to college, the main things I will use it for will be schoolwork, downloading/listening to music, IMing, and the occasional game. I dont really want a super tricked out gaming laptop, but something that will function normally when playing a game. I dont need anything related to photo/video editing. Im also thinking about going for one of the more midsized models. I dont really like the 12" screen ones, so Im thinking about a 15" screen, as the bigger ones seem a little bulky.
My two main ideas are the
-Dell E1505 http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/entnb_e1505?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
- Sony Vaio VGN-FJ290 http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHO...&Dept=computers
Im kind of leaning towards the Vaio, since it starts cheaper, so I can add more things, and the colors are hot, A green laptop would be perfect.
Has anyone had any experience with sony laptops? Im trying to see if there is just something really bad about them. I kind of know about dells, since a friend has one. Hows the customer service with sony? Any suggestions would be great! thanks

Ive had a Dell for about a year now and never had a problem with it. I'm glad I went with the Dell.

I'll offer some advice
Make sure you have 2 GB of ram, 533 MHZ Make sure your motherboard is 667 MHZ Make sure you get at least a 2.4 GHZ processor, and make sure it is not a centrino, or celeron. Make sure your hard drive runs at 7200 rpm's Make sure you have at least 128 MB of video ram.
If you do all that you will have an excellent laptop, and it can easily be done for under 1800.

All that for $1800 or less? Is that possible? If it is, excellent suggestions.
I have one more: DON'T BUY A TOSHIBA! I repaired them for 4 years in high school and every single one had the same problem. Eventually the power supply-to-motherboard solder breaks and the damn thing won't charge. I got a new 3.04GHz 1GB RAM Toshiba laptop, hoping they would have fixed the design flaw. Guess what? THEY DIDN'T! Now my super awesome 3.04Ghz laptop has to have a book under the power cord connection to charge. Mother fuckers! Now I have to take the damn thing apart and resolder the connection. Have you ever taken a laptop apart? It's like a puzzle with a million god damn screws.
