I don't understand dreadlocks at all, or just the hippie uniform in general.  These people obviously spend a lot of time trying to look the part, but act like they are so nonchalant about their appearance.  I just can't take a person seriously if they are wearing grateful dead, tye dye, dreadlocks, hemp jewelery, etc.  I mean how insecure does a person have to be to try so hard to fit in?

When the "movement" first started it was something else entirely.  I can respect the Merry Pranksters dressing crazy and putting paint all over their face, because they were completely going against the norm.  When people first started letting their hair dread naturally it was also like a fuck you to society, and I respect that as well.

Now, 50 years later, anyone can go into almost any hair salon and get their hair dreaded.  You can get tye-dye at Old Navy.  Get your Grateful Dead at Best Buy.  Its like these people completely missed the point of what they are trying to portray.  Find a new way to go against society, you moronic trendy pseduohippies.

Ehh. I wear tie-dye because I like the way it looks. If you make it yourself each one is different than the next, which is cool to me by itself. I like how trippy it looks and I like the bright swirling colors. They stand out a lot more than other shirts. Not only that but tie-dye seems to, for whatever reason, attract the type of girl I'm attracted to. Tie-dye is a winner in my book.

I own and wear a Grateful Dead shirt because I happen to like the Grateful Dead. Alot. They're one of my favorite bands. I sometimes get compliments on my Grateful Dead shirt and make new friends who also like the Grateful Dead. One friend saw my Grateful Dead shirt and bought one of their albums, loved it, and is now a Grateful Dead fan. This makes me happy, because in my opinion, the Grateful Dead are a good band, and my friend now likes more good music too.

While I don't own any hemp jewelery, I like that as well. I think it looks cool along with everything else you've mentioned. I find it attractive when worn by many women.

The point being, you can wear all this stuff without the purpose of 'going against' society. I don't wear tie-dye as a fuck you to the man, I wear it because I happen to like it.

Edited for more thoughts after this point. I guess I just don't really judge people based on hairstyles/clothing/fashion/whatever. If I see a guy wearing a collared polo, I assume he wears that shirt because he likes it, or because he wants to be a part of that social group. Either reason is perfectly legitimate. I sometimes wear polos as well, because I think they, like tie-dye, look cool. Fashion is a way to express yourself and sometimes beliefs, and however you choose to do that is fine with me.

why do people get dreads?

Better question... why do people care at all about what other people do with their hair? It's just hair. Chill some

How is caring about peoples' hairstyles any less chill than caring about people who care about peoples' hairstyle? Either way, you're sticking your nose in other peoples' business. :shrug2:

People wear dreads for the same reason people shave their heads, grow their hair out, and everything in between... a combination of hairstyle and lifestyle. Dreads make a pretty bold statement about who you are, no different than having a mohawk, or a huge beard, or a weird androgynous/emo haircut.

Not everybody does those things for the same reason--did you know that attention whores exist? Because they do. :coaster:

I think there are enough people in the world that I am allowed to be picky about who I spend my time with.  Sure, a person could be really awesome on the inside regardless of their outward appearance, but there are also lots of awesome people who don't dress gay.  Feel free to be offended by my use of the word gay, but I can't think of a better word to describe that look.

I'm not going to be mean to a person because of how they look, I'm just saying I don't understand it and I don't want to be seen with it in public.  And if I ever met someone that could honestly contribute to my personal growth and happiness, I wouldn't disregard them because of their hairstyle or choice of clothes.  But in my experience, hippies really don't have much depth.
