why do people get dreads?

just another attempt to feel apart of something? to help form a social identity?
to me, i've always assumed people with dreads are going to be, when it comes down to it, vain and fake and insecure, since they have put in so much effort (ironically into a hairstyle that originated from a complete lack of effort) into creating this image.
most people that have told me they want to get dreads are 18-20'ish and looking for somewhere to belong. i am wary of dreaded white folks because its like they are taking the idea of who is the realest and trying to emulate it.

Girls with dreads turn me on, each to their own I guess. Some like dreads, some don't! Never met a hippie partying dude in his 60's with gray dreadlocks? Those are awesome
I'm sorry

Chicks dig them and it makes it much easier to score any kind of substance no matter where you are. Its a look I've always liked (since I was a kid), so I went for it.
It is pretty much a status thing, but it doesn't mean you have to be an elistist dick about it, yeah some people that have them are "scenesters" but the majority of them you meet with dreads are drugged out wooks who are actually safe as fuck. The only people that actually seem to care about it is preppy judgmental assholes like yourself.

all i ask is that if you have dreads you at least know the history behind it and the statement it makes to have your hair like that.

"preppy judgmental assholes like yourself" haha
that would be me as well.
I'm not a huge drug user so I could give a shit about scoring. I don't want the type of filthy stank-puss bitches that like dudes with dreads. All those old guys with dreads are washed up old fucks that love to hear themselves talk and are burnt out of their minds. I'm not big on bullshit small-talk either so no thanks.
I want to make money, help people, and rid the world of ignorance by spreading proper education. Dreads seem to do the opposite of that. There is a balance between society's standards and freedom to do what you want to your body. That's where people like me reside.
I think that about covers my opinion of it

History behind it? As in, just not brushing your hair? Dreadlocks are NOT solely religious.

I'm doing a masters degree in physics, at a Russel group university (i.e. one of the best in the country). If you're shallow enough to judge me on looks alone.. well fuck ya buddy.

Dreads take a lot less work than having long hair. I have to comb my hair out every 2 days in the shower and it takes about a half an hour, if I goto a festie and it birdsnests bad it can take an hour to get all the knots out. Dreads are pretty much good to go once you get them. They take a lot less work. I like how they look, and if my hair wasn't so cool looking I'd probably have dreads already. Don't judge people on a hair style, not all people with dreads are dicks, just like not all dudes with long hair like metal. Its a hair style some people think looks cool, it isn't anything more or less.

Exactly this. It's a fucking hairstyle. How can people who claim to be open minded be this judgmental about how a person looks?
The only people that actually seem to care about my hairstyle are preppy / trendy / hipster kids who wear brand names and drink their weight in jaeger bombs... even then this only applies to a small cross section of them.
I've long since given up caring about how other people look. my group of friends is diverse as hell, from ghetto kids to middle upper class straight edge folk. All that really matter is what a person has to say.
At any high level job (i.e. one that requires skill and understanding), looks are disregarded anyways.. I mean have you ever seen the social misfits that work in a lab?

Wow, you fail. You make it seem as if a persons hairstyle totally defines their character... you're a shallow judgemental idiot.
I don't have dreads or anything, but I do have hair half way down my back... and to judge my character based on something like that (which people have) is just fucking retarded.
That about covers my oppinion.

very respectful answer until the last sentence.
i have always given alot of thought towards how other people present themselves, and what they are trying to communicate/accomplish through their image. how am i a 'preppy judgmental asshole' simply by questioning and trying to put this things into perspective?
i care about everything in the sense that i want to understand everything. it's not that i am specifically looking down on people with dreads. i just question the motivation for getting/maintaining dreadlocks, as i see it as an attempt to manipulate others opinions of them. and it especially sets of my paranoia alarms of who is real and who is fake out here in this world, since its almost like they are trying to impersonate who is viewed as the realest and most down to earth.
i, too, like the look. and i would imagine it makes it easier to get drugs.
but i do not understand how i am being elitist?
well, anywho, thanks for the answer

I'm guessing you have short hair. Why is that? Surely you can say the same thing for every hair style? Someone else is always going to have the same hair style as you, that doesn't mean you have that style to form a social identity.

No more than someone wearing a a gold necklace wants to be judged by it. Its expressing themselves without talking, kind of like wearing nice clothes or wearing a hat.

cool as in socially and sexually attractive, id say. And yes, they do want to be judged by them, just not negatively.

i have long hair. why is that? because i feel like my hairline is receding and i'd like to go all out with it before its too late
and yep. you can say the same thing for every hair style. we choose our hair styles (consciously or not). the rationales behind them are different, and i haven't said 'why do people grow their hair out long?' or 'why do people get buzzcuts?' because dreadlocks are associated with real, down to earth people who supposedly could care less about looks and the physical/material world. yet apparently they do care, as they have put in the deliberate effort to achieve and maintain dreadlocks.
