depression, anti-depressants, and psychedelics?

I've been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, which basically means I get recurring episodes of severe depression and may soon be going on either lexapro or prozac and I was wondering how this would interact with me taking shrooms or any general psychedelics/drugs. I've smoked weed, popped pills, and drank while depressed and these were just generally sucky, if not relatively harmless, experiences. Shrooms and other psychedelics are much more powerful drugs though, and I was wondering the risks of taking shrooms doubled with clinical depression and, possibly, a regular medication regimen?

i dunno, i wouldn't take anything if i were you.
doctors usually don't know about illegal drugs and the effects mixed with medications.

Lexapro and Prozac are SSRI's and will cancel out the effects of psychedelics.

Pot is about the only drug that works while taking an SSRI.

Will you be doing any kind of psychotherapy conjoined with taking medication? There's all kinds of studies that show the great results of this mixture.

Like appleorange said the effects of psychedelics will be blunted. My experience is there's no real 'trip', just some visual detail increase, and an ecstasy that is short-lived; it lasts probably a few minutes. However, the medicinal value of mushrooms still sorta takes hold, for example you will feel less depressed the next day and for a week at the very least. No it is no dangerous, I've done it three times now on an SNRI and Abilify. It is a waste of mushrooms though. If you really want to trip you'd probably have to do 10grams dried. That would probably do the equivalent of 3-5grams.

DXM works. Although you will probably need higher doses than usual. I did 600mg and I was still walking around ... sort of.

EDIT - I want to just say I don't recommend anti-depressants. They are good for getting you out of a hole, but they're not the solution to your depression, unless you have serotonin depletion. I'm going to cold turkey Cymbalta (SNRI) soon so I can trip again, plus it's killed my libido and my emotions are a bit numb, only takes 3-4 days to be inactive.

Naw, other drugs work fine too (at least xanax, opiates and JWH-018 do IME). Just psychedelics like mushies and acid are muted.

But hey, major depressive disorder is much more important to correct, than having some trips is.

I'd recommend Celexa over Lexapro.

Your mileage may vary but I found the next generation of anti-depressants to be very helpful.

Before you put a firm belief in the diagnoses, you should really ask yourself a few questions.

What kind of doctor is this? How long have I been seeing him/her? Are they a counselor, APRN, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.? How long have they been practicing? How long was I going to counseling before I was medicated? Does this conflict/agree with a second opinion?

Just wanted to put that out there.


Also, when I was on Lexapro (yuck) I could still trip fine. The problem I had was that it was giving me too many side effects - couldn't ejaculate but could fuck like no other, gained some weight, couldn't get a cigarette buzz, etc.

Celexa worked short-term but in the end, a few years later, finally got diagnosed with BPD.

In my experience, SSRI's (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors; Lexapro and Prozac are both in this family) will not entirely "cancel out" the effects of psychedelics, but they will weaken them.  Some people take MAOI's (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) in order to enhance the effects of certain psychedelics, but this should be done with extreme caution; my knowledge on this is shaky but I think I've read that MAOI's combined with ecstasy have resulted in death.  Erowid is a great source to learn about the safety of many drug combinations.

I was diagnosed with chronic depression a few years back.  When I started college I began to experiment with mushrooms, acid, etc.  I dropped acid while on NO medication and had a wonderful (if occasionally difficult) experience.  I haven't tried it since beginning to take Zoloft (an SSRI).  I then tried mushrooms after having been on Zoloft for about a month and had an alright time.  Same with ecstasy.

I stopped taking Zoloft because it was not worth the weight I gained (which just made me more depressed) and it made me somewhat... stoic.  Since then I have had amazing, amazing experiences with mushrooms and ecstasy. I've been experimenting with using psychedelics much less for recreation and instead using them as a tool to work through my psychological struggles, and I've personally had a lot of success. That's not to say things don't get difficult, but working through the difficult parts of the trips and coming out ok is very rewarding to me.  But everyone is different and has a different mindset; I've never had a bad trip and I handle psychedelics very well.

Agree with this for the most part - antidepressants helped me get out of a bad place but I'm glad to be done with them.  I recommend them as a tool, not a solution.  Psychotherapy and counseling, I've found to be helpful too, if you are compatible with your therapist.  Doctor shopping is tedious but worth it.  Everyone is different and will have success with different types of treatment.
