Melbourne Gyms??
    #12475605 -

I found this and a few others growing by a tree stump. Gills are orange. The spore print is taking ages. So far it's orange brown (mainly orange). The cap has a distinct pattern which i'm pretty sure is what Gyms are meant to have.

I found this big fella growing alone in wood chips (not growing directly out of woodchips) in a nature reserve. When it was smaller it had the same distinct pattern as the mushroom in the second picture. The stem is extremely wide. The gills are hardly visible.

I found these growing in the grass, not around any trees. The more i look at them the more i think they are not Gyms.

Here's the spore print. It's from the mushie in the first picture.

Yeah, Gymnopilus junonius, I suppose. It wouldn't hurt to improve your photography skills, however, like learning to use a macro and choosing the right lighting conditions (daylight, but not bright sun works best).

The fibrillose-squamulose fibrils on the cap in the first photo are not common and usually appear in age rather than in younger specimens.  I suspect that even in Australia that is the case.  Take a look at this specimen that turned up in Melbourne a few days ago.

Those are pretty classic caps for G. spectabilis aka junonius.

You might have the same thing, but you might not.  All I am sure of is it is a Gym.

Taking a look at them from the side on a good quality photo usually helps to be sure, but those are of poor quality.

Do they contain Psilocybin? I thought the consensus on here was that the Australian ones didn't? Or am I confused?

No. The Australian variety does not contain psilocybin.

But they may have bis-noryangonin [4-hydroxy-6-(4-hydrostyryl)-2-pyrone] and hispidine [4-hydroxy-6-(3,4-dihydroxystyryl)-2-pyrone], which are closely related to the alpha-pyrones found in Kava Kava.  Those are interesting chemicals.

Has anyone ever bio-essayed these chemicals?

Normally they come with the mix in the active Gyms, making it a different kind of trip.  As far as I know no one has bioassayed the non-active ones for these chemicals.  As Wiki explains the effects of Kava, I think it would be interesting to bioassay these "non-active" Gyms for the Kava-like chemicals to see if the mushrooms can be used that way.

"The effects of a kava drink vary widely with the particular selection of kava plant(s) and amount. A potent drink results in a faster onset with a lack of stimulation; the user's eyes become sensitive to light, they soon become somnolent and then have deep, dreamless sleep within 30 minutes. Sleep is often restful and there are pronounced periods of sleepiness correlating to the amount and potency of kava consumed. Unlike with alcohol-induced sleep, after wakening the drinker does not experience any mental or physical after effects. However, this sleep has been reported as extremely restful and the user often wakes up more stimulated than he or she normally would (though excessive consumption of exceptionally potent brew has been known to cause pronounced sleepiness into the next day). Although heavy doses can cause deep dreamless sleep, it is reported that many people experience lighter sleep and rather vivid dreams after drinking moderate amounts of kava."

Hmmm...

That would be extremely interesting.

I am a big fan of kava kava, and have consumer kavalactones and psilocybin/psilocin together before.

I hope someone is up for the task of the bio-essay!

Gyms 4sure have a extra touch of majic to them:stirthepot: Very special indeed -:crazy2:Gotta be comsumed in higher quantities to feel vivid effects - but aanyone i have ever given gyms to has really really had great memorable times - all my buddies and my wifey all doubted me even at first , then were so spun they were thanking me:laugh: ( i always say they have special "feel good" properties) gyms have the coolest natural feeling full of laughter and even the patterned visuals - - - - i swear that one of the best times ever at a show was when i ate about 15dry gr and went to a small venue to see the toots and the maytals :jah: Fucking perfect flow for the gyms:biggrin:

Also keep note - if you do wana pic some gyms for the majic qualities your better off taking only smaller fruits just befor the veil tears - big ones don't contain much and then you gotta eat a ton - Tea is by far my fav way to get teh gym juices flowing - - - i also like to start off a journey by drinking gym tea - then eating some good cubies , then hit up some spice - - - its the :trippinballs:trifecta sure to have you n the clouds
