HELP IDENTIFYING, MELBOURNE

Hey Guys.
i am very new to shroom hunting and need some help identifying some mushies i found. i have figured out that it is the beginning of the season in melbourne and we have just had a wet period and it has been rather cold. i found these growing in a very damp area of the garden at the bottom of a very rotten tree, (seems like its coming out of the roots)there are too large clumps of them and it is very hard to get in and take a good photo without tearing them to shreds or digging them out completly. i would like to know if they are actives of any sort or if they are inactives are they a sign that somthing else is likely to grow later. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED,

Gymnopilus junonius.


Known to be active overseas but seem to be inactive in Australia.

so are they always inactive in austrlaia or is a bit ambiguous? sorry but i have very little knowledge about these. also are they a sign of something else possibly?

lord mayo tried it in aus, along with a couple others and it was inactive. i think mayo had 15 grams wet.

dude if you're in melbourne and you can't find subs now thats just not right man.

i have hardly been looking due to minimal spare time in year 12, i just stumbled across these in my backyard, and started hoping to hell that they were actives

Pretty classic G. spectabilis aka junonius from the appearance of the caps.  Taste them by nibbling a small piece and spitting it out.  It should be bitter.  As far as activity is concerned you can try eating a small amount, like one mushroom.  If there are no effects, increase the amount.

He's in Australia. AFAIK G. junonius have only been reported as inactive in Australia.

Thanks.  Yeah, I got that GK.  That's why I recommended testing them.  We have reports in from the Western States here that say the same thing.  No one seems to know why this is.  Since the mushrooms isn't poisonous, other than its active properties, I would bioassay them. One anomaly changes the entire paradigm.  We're known for that here at the Shroomery. :wink:

Totally agree. Some people don't even mind the bitter taste of Gymnopilus.

Yes.  And what about bis-noryangonin [4-hydroxy-6-(4-hydrostyryl)-2-pyrone] and hispidine [4-hydroxy-6-(3,4-dihydroxystyryl)-2-pyrone]?  I would also bioassay for them as well.  Who says that just because the Gyms that don't contain psilocybin and psilocin they aren't chemically interesting?  I haven't heard of anyone checking the "non-active" types for a Kava Kava-like experience.

Actually I'm one of those people that don't mind the bitter taste of Gymns, actually, I can barely taste the bitterness.  BUT, they give me raunchy gas and occasionally the hershey squirts.  I find the flavour to be something that I wouldn't put on a salad or a steak, but still not bad.
