'Ancient Aliens' on the History Channel
    #12431793 -

History Channel? Not the SyFy Channel? Nope.

Was on last night. Yet another in an endless series of von Däniken spin-offs whose sole argument is one of incredulity.

"See how tight the tolerances are in the building of this ancient monolith are? Therefore aliens!"

"Look at how big and heavy these monoliths are. Primitive man could not possible move these. Therefore aliens!"

Hard to counter such flawless logic.

Proof of ancient flying machines was even funnier. They find an old carving of a bird. They then make a model many times larger and add a tail to balance it - and it glides. Proof Egypt had airplanes. In a similar vein, they find a solid gold ancient Aztec object about the size of a humming bird that looks vaguely like an airplane. Then they make a larger model out of light wood and add remote controls to the aerilons and a motor and propeller and lo - it flies.

I am convinced. My entire picture of the ancient world turned on its head.

It is because people believe we are so amazing today, that they believe ancient peoples couldn't achieve great feats of engineering.

"We can't do this now, so humans never could have done it!"

Imo, our dependence on technology now is a hinder to ingenious ideas to carry out certain engineering feats without sophisticated machinery.  When you don't have laser guided diamond saws to cut stone perfectly, you're going to have to make up an ingenious method to do it.

People today see these feats of engineering, and think that because people didn't have all the technology we have today it wouldn't be possible.

We are just not giving ancient cultures enough credit for the amazing engineering feats they completed.

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

Congratulations on tying two completely incongruous ideas together.

Woops, syntax fail there.  Fixed it in the edit, should make more sense.

I'm sure you got what I meant though, but thanks for pointing out my mistake so I could fix it.

Your piece succeeds at rhetoric but not at truth finding.  Take that for what you will.  :satansmoking:

I presented it as my opinion, hence the IMO.  Why not make a counter argument or state what you think on the topic rather than just saying I fail at truth finding.

Why do people jump to aliens as conclusions then?

I'd live to have conversations on the topic, not my own rhetoric.

I do too.  I'm ambivalent on the matter.

i thought the same thing when i saw that documentary.  their proofs for aliens aren't much of proofs.

I think your judgment of technology is a little naive. Technology is the application of those ingenious ideas to make life a little better. I wonder where you draw the lines on "sophisticated machinery". Using pulleys 2000 years ago probably seemed pretty sophisticated, but the ancients shouldn't have used it right? Technology also lifts many of burdens that fuel human brutality. The Egyptians wouldn't have needed to enslave an entire race of people to build a big triangle for their afterlife mumbojumbo if they had a conveyor belt that allowed easy movement of limestone.

A laser-guided, diamond saw is incredibly ingenious.
