casing question

how should you sterilize the vermiculate. also, how should you keep the casing layer mosturized? should the top layer be wet? thx

verm can be baked in the oven either dry or with a pre-measured amount of water added (cover with foil if baking with water. casings can be misted. depends on your defnition of wet. ever try searching?

thanks....also, could you sterilized a mixture of vermiculite and brown rice flour and add it to the casing, so the mushrooms have more "food"

bad idea. casings are supposed to be non-nutritious. you sound like you really should be doing some studying in the FAQ section.

you dont need to sterilize dry verm.  It's not gonna harbour any contams.  In all my straight verm casings, I've never once pre-sterilized the verm.  I've also never had a contaminated casing :laugh:

Well then why do ppl use horse shit? I'm sure its packed full of nutrients. Thats why my ol' mans been using it in his gardens for years.

Ahh makes sense. So all this plaing with poo is sorta pointless when I could just be plaing with some good smelling coco instead. Guess I'm off to the coco market!

No, you can play with both, one or the other, or neither at all. There's no sense in discarding poo for coco coir since poo is primarly a substrate and coco is used as a casing layer.

Still don't get it? A casing is not just the word for mushrooms growing in something. A casing is a layer placed over colonized substrate to: -regulate water/air, protect against contams, encourage even, healthy pinning, and some types of mushrooms require this layer to pin.
So, no, don't throw away poo for coco. That would be like throwing away shampoo for conditioner. They both have uses.
