Hello, good morning and Happy Tuesday!

I've searched the board and the web and haven't seen any articles on this particular type of kit so I thought that I would start my own post and ask.  Please feel free to slap me if I have just missed this information elsewhere, just point me in the right direction. :tongue:

So, after my first experience with Cubensis I heard that there were mushroom kits available at the head shop down at Pike Place Market.  The next day I walked down there, dropped $65 and came home with a cute little kit.

Has anyone seen these kits where there are two bags...1) compost and 2) Rye on one end of the bag with a red piece of tape and a red string inside, separating the rye end of the bag from the end with a little qtip head with spores on top.  Has anyone seen this?

The method (so far, I'll probably ask more questions later) has simply been to take the red tape off and let the qtip fall into the rye.  I then shook up the bag for 3-5 minutes and put it in a cabinet to sit for "1 - 3 weeks" until it gets that white look to it.

As long as the compost bag remains unopened, if the rye molds and turns colors I'll get a free replacement within a month.:mushroom2:

Has anyone had experience with this type of kit?  What were the pitfalls?  What should I worry about and look out for?  Any big suggestions on how to handle it after the rye has turned completely white?  Keep it in the bag or put it in a container with holes?

Any information and hints would be greatly appreciated.  I'll post a pit soon.  This is day #2.

Id follow directions given on the kit..next time buy your own rye and compost/poo/coir, a syringe and do it yourself to save money. In the mean time, it sounds like it would work, if the kit was made right.

Well I didn't have access to this message board when I bought that kit.  Don't hate! LOL

Besides a critique of my purchase does anyone have any pointers for me?  Sheesh, that's really all I need.  :wink:

Yeah, the instructions provided were somewhat CRAP.  I had to call them back and get clarification.  She took it out of the box and into a plastic bag so that it was easier to carry, but I'm now wondering if more instructions were on the box that she threw out.

so they sell bags with cubensis spores attached to them? i had no idea. that seems.. odd.

this was not a good idea. you should not have really shaken it at all let alone three to five minutes.
but i guess if all the spores are on the q-tip it should be fine.

if you do a search for homestead ez grow (assuming that's what you have) there are a lot of posts from other members about them. i read through a couple and it sounds like you've done everything right so far.

even if you search google for 'homestead ez grow', you'll get all the shroomery posts. it seems the consensus is that they work out pretty well although a bit overpriced. just make sure you learn how to take some prints so next time you don't have to spend that kind of cash.:thumbup:

this is from the homestead books website:

The Ez Gro Mushroomkit includes everything you need including Psilocybe Cubensis Spores, Compost, Growing Chamber, and complete illustrated instructions.

A basic 2 step system that requires nothing extra from you at all. Even the Micro-Environment Chamber is included to grow your mushrooms in. It's completely hassle free.

    * No Sterile Work
    * No Pressure Cooker
    * No Artificial Lighting
    * No Syringes
    * No Petri Dishes
    * No Watering

There are only 2 steps involved and the kit is guaranteed:

  1. Mix the Grain and the Psilocybe Cubensis Spores together without ever opening the bag
  2. After the grain is colonized, mix it with the compost.

That's it! That's All!

Put the plastic chamber in a warm place and wait a couple of weeks for your mushrooms to grow. No need to water it or even look at it. Everything is done automatically.

i bought this same kit for my first grow. it ended in failure. due to the horrbile info they give you. did yours come with a dvd? if so try and see what happens when you place it in and turn on the microwave. anyways, dont shake the bag up like it says. pull the string and move the q-tip towards the sides. this way you can see mycl fster and can shake it up once it gets around 33% done. dont put it in anything over 80 degrees, just put the spawn bag on your dresser and forget about it for a few weeks. after its 100% colonized break it up. cut open your compost bag and dump the colonized rye seed in the bag. mix up, wait for it to colonize and once that is 100% that should initiate pinning. good luck, dont buy it again though.

Didn't get a DVD.  Can't find the cord for my digital camera so no pics to share yet.

There are now sme small mushrooms growing in there.  The bag is not entirely white, not by far - should I transfer it to the compst yet?  Any suggestions?
