I would recomend against it for a "somewhat experienced grower". Hawk says "At this point I would say this species is not for beginners at all". He goes on to say that it is potent. But the mycelium is completely different then P.C.. It is very weak and contaminates easily. For a sure sucess I would recommend getting a typical P.C. for your first time with the kit. My freind of a freind is using Ryche's Cambodian . They are supposed to be extremely fast growers. He has never tried them before so we shall see.

He doesn't really check the boards very often. He is very busy. But you can read this on his web site about (Copelandia) Panaeolus Tropicalis . They are the only Copelandia that he has syringes of. Can you make your own syringes? If so then you have a few more choices(i.e.sporeworks). It says they can be difficult to fruit on T.H.E.. It just depends on how good you are I guess. If you are as good as ralphster44 then I am sure they will be fine. If not then I would go with something easier. I have a mycology related question. Wtf does Copelandia refer too? I have seen it on T.H.E. and a few other places. And I love your pic ralphster44. Heh The Hawks Eye-Fungi PerfectiEdited by Eddie Walker on 03/11/01 03:18 PM.

Copelandia refers to an interpretation of taxonomy by Dr. Rolf Singer. Instead of treating genus Panaeolus as all encompassing as some mycologists do, he broke it up into Panaeolina, Copelandia, Anellaria, and Panaeolus under the subfamily Panaeoloideae where tropical and subtropical species (ie tropicalis and cyanescens) are put under Copelandia. It's just another instance of people not making up their minds. Check out my attachment to see how my Indians did on my homemade compost. I was a little disappointed but they got hit hard by Cecid flies (thousands upon thousands) and based on this I believe they did quite well.

Just a heads up, I recieved my kit from Db/THE today. Only a week and half since I ordered it and I live close to the east coast. Figured out why it might cost a little high too. Shipping alone cost $26 to ship to me. Soup- a little disappointed? I would love to get a flush like that. =) What did you use for compost mixture? Peace.

I used a method that has been widely posted both here at the shroomery and at drool donkey. It's from the book "Growing Wild Mushrooms" by Bob Harris. Do a search and you are bound to find it. Or go here. http://discharge-o.tripod.com/compost.htm I personally used 5 oz blood meal, 5-6 gallons of loose straw, and 2-3 gallons dried cow manure. I have some other trays that should be pinning soon, one with trops so we'll see what happens. Good luck and if you have any serious questions about this method, ask.

Very nice answer soup. Soup would you suggest a "somewhat experienced grower" try Copelandia? The Hawks Eye-Fungi PerfectiEdited by Eddie Walker on 03/13/01 12:30 AM.

If you can grow out spawn and case cubensis then you probably can grow copelandia. Probably need dung or compost. Birdseed works I've heard but it would give even smaller yields than the already small yields you normally get. McMan- It's doing alright. Those were in a run of the mill fan and mist rubbermaid though, no perlite or anything else.

Does anyone really think theres a difference beetween fungal fever/Rych Hawk. No theres not! I think he's made that clear by defending the prices of the compost and spamming the compost over and over.

This could explain why he's suddenly SO busy...I know he's normaly kinda busy with his Spore Business but he said he was going to post more pics of the kit in one or two days and it has been TWO weeks! Shouldn't Fungal fever be taking care of selling the kits??? Just curious....

Ryche is not the same as Fungal Fever. I sent my money to Ryche via Pay-Pal and guess what it took a lot longer because I sent it to the wrong place. Speculate if you wish but this is The Hawks Eye's address. T.H.E. 7650 S. McClintock DR. Suite# 103-378 Tempe AZ. 85284 O.K. now here is Fungal Fever's address. Fungal Fever PMB 170 POB 1790 Silverdale WA 98383 I guess Ryche has that being in two places at the same time thing down. Or maybe they are seperate hmmm theres just no telling.

If you haven't noticed ryche has been going on alot of "trips" lately. I don't see why he just dosen't get someone else to ship them.

I just noticed something. That flush I posted above yielded 550 wet grams and just over 2 oz dry. That was with about three and a half pounds homemade compost, half the cropping surface, and only one quart birdseed spawn. And to boot, it got hit with mad Cecid fly larvae. I'm also in the process of expecting a big second flush which looks far healthier and bigger than the first as all the larvae actually jumped out of the container and died (maybe they couldn't take tripping any more?). That seems over twice the efficiency of Ryche's compost, not that his yields are bad by any means, but it just seems that with me making such crude compost and the dung brothers compost with all its experience and time spent formulating exact parameters, it doesn't pan out with what I'm seeing. I mean nothing derogitory by this but it proves that homemade compost can be pretty damn wonderful, even without the glamour of secret ingredients and everything else. Of course, I actually had to do something...

Soup what kind of growing enviroment was it in? Was it grown in The Mushroom Cultivator? With Ryches kit he says no fanning is needed. I would think that if you took Ryches dung and threw it into a similar environment it would turn out just as good. Maybe if you feel like it you could test out the DB just to see if you get the same or better yeilds. I would understand if you don't have the cash or just don't care enough to invest money into some DB. I am gonna post your picture here at the bottom of my thread so everyone can see. I have resized it so that it doesn't make the thread super wide. Below is Soup's picture. You can click on it to make it full size teehee. The Hawks Eye-Fungi Perfecti

My .02 is I'm sure "hawks compost" is very good mushroom compost, but there are many people in this country/world with far more recources than Ryche or anyone he knows working with compost. Like multi million dollar Mushroom factories, and Paul Stamets, etc. I have a major mushroom factory close to me, produces many different varietys of gourmet's, they use straw and horse dung, and maybe cottonseed meal/chicken manure to up nitrogen, but I'm sure of the straw/ horse dung. And from what I know and have read making compost is pretty simple, there is nothing high tech about it, you just even out the nitrogen/carbon ratios, end up with about 1.5-1.6% Nitrogen, and have about 70% moisture content. Using the wood shavings/cow manure to improve the consistency to allow it so fruit well in a crappy plastic tub with no extra humidification seems to be one of the major breakthroughs here. Because Everything I've read says Cow manure sucks compared to any other manure, but maybe using more of it and leaving out the straw is the secret. How many of you have used properly made compost and not had good results? When I say properly made I mean using Stamets or other authority's methods. I'm about too once it warms up. I know where he's getting the compost from, well actually that may be where the checks are going to and he's just getting a cut since, it's a company in WA. I dug it up in a 1 yr old forum. Of course it's not called Fungal Fever or dung brothers.
