Yea I get this part. I was just wondering what does OP have to do in order to get in there.

OP would need a basic science degree, with high marks, lots of relevant lab experience and good letters of recommendation.  Then he'd need another 5 years of graduate school.  After that it's another 3+ of a postdoc.

At that point, he could then study whatever area of science was actually being funded to be studied.  Even with an advanced degree, it's a myth you can just study whatever you like and/or find interesting.

...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge.  It is an indellible experience; it is forever known.  I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did.

...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely.

I'm going to start with volunteer work at the Berkeley Free Clinic next month (I have to wait until the third Monday for the orientation!) and then take classes over the summer - I don't feel like wasting any time.

Good for you man. I really hope you stick to it. I'm going back in the fall. Maybe I can feed off of your enthusiasm.

Good luck, don't forget to stop and smell the flowers from time to time to appreciate what you're doing.

My advice is to find those things that give pleasure and do them often without too much attachment and relax and wait for the show to end.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

I say go for it. People don't realize that pharmacists have other alternatives than working for big pharma and fucking people over. I don't feel like getting to into it, but I too have looked at going into pharmacy and getting my PharmD. I still consider it a viable option. Do a ton of research before you make any decisions. Just remember there's a LOT more that you can do with a pharm degree than make the supernewawesome antidepressant that is horribly over-prescribed.
