We need some rules on sporting events
    #12287309 -

now when you enter the sports forum you halfway expect some giveaways if you open a link, but assume people would be nice enough to put some spoiler tags or something.

but when i go into the pub, its pretty fucked up to see in the title of the thread the god dam winner of the main event...when i was avoiding the dam sports forum on purpose, but i get tagged in the dam pub anyway:crankey:

i dunno how to fix this but man this sucks, i was so gunna watch the UFC today with high hopes and excitment...now im fucking drained...day ruined.

people need to respect these sporting events, it isn't just tv.  the whole point of watching is to see who wins, and obviously not everyone seen the fight the first day and people know this yet they smear the winners everywhere ruining it for people:sad:

anyways it would be nice if a little something could be done, i know it can be tricky fixing certain problems as its a double edged sword.  i feel for starters all sporting events should be kept to the sports forum so i can avoid asshats when needed, or at the very least if not, the dam winners shouldn't be posted in the thread title...

for a more complex fix, perhaps a script or w/e could be written to hide all threads that have "tags" in them, like say UFC in the title.  altho that would only work well if it was easily toggled as the profile/account pages are pretty dense and im not sure if it would be utilized if it was that deep...so i dunno im trying to think of fixes/ideas as i feel people should do when posting a problem

anyways i hope some kind of fix could be done as this is painful for me, my heart hurtz

If you go in the Pub and a thread says "Hendo beat the shit out of (whoever it was)" then there's no way for him to avoid it.

There's also no way to enforce it. I mean you can put it in the rules but most people don't read the rules so they wouldn't think anything of it. I'm surprised there aren't spoilers in the Sports forum more often actually.

Of course there is.
He just should avoid anything that may spoil it, like being on any website that could possibly spoil it, like any news site, or  any forum. He should avoid radio and news television as well. I guess he should tell his friends not to spoil it, too.

That all sounds ridiculous for me to do, but he if really cares about not being spoiled, then he should go to those lengths to ensure that he doesn't find out.

i do avoid the sports channel when i have a game tivo'd, same thing with newspapers, and news sites.  If ive got a game to watch i avoid looking at shit like that, and as i mentioned before i was avoiding the "sports forum".  so im not sure what gave you the impression that i don't do those things.  as for friends, most people know better than to ruin shit, they're usually like "did you see that game last night"  then they give you a chance to say something.

Sure the pub is open to all topics, and i understand that, but at the same time we have a sports forum and i thought it would have been contained to that area...infact i really didn't think any posts about it would have been made as i havn't seen all that many in the sports forum as is.  and as mentioned before i really didn't expect e-tards to be posting wins in the thread titles in the pub.

as for putting it in the pub rules, if we can inforce things like topics with lacking content then surely we could do something about titles with game results in them

this is a joke, right?  you really expect there to be some kind of site-wide enforced rule, like "no spoiling any sporting event of any kind for 48 hours" or something?  that's life, buddy, sports are meant to be watched live, and if you have to tivo it, there is always that risk that someone will give up the winner.

sheesh...

where did i say site wide?  infact i specified and said PUB RULES. read what i wrote and then comment, like i said i halfway expect that crap in the sports forum ok.  but not in the pub.  and this is 2010, not everyone can watch it live and this is to be expected.  whats not to be expected is for people to put the scores n crap in thread titles like the pub forum is some kind of ticker or RSS feed.

and again you really need to read what i wrote because after rereading what you wrote i can tell you didn't read a word of mine.

haha, you're right, your blather is way tl;dr

so how long to you propose they enforce this rule?  48 hours?  until you say it's okay?

why don't you read what i wrote and you'll have a better idea.  i find it hard for me to explain it to someone who admittedly doesn't read a post before replying to it.

and are you implying im the only one who feels this way?  have you never had something ruined like this before?  do people enjoy things like that happening?  you act as if im alone in this or something.  do you actually oppose what im suggesting or are you just playing devils advocate?

a little of both.  it doesn't seem really feasible as a rule to enforce, but I am also just kinda being a dick.

Why would it be harder to enforce than posts using derogatory terms?  Giving out sources?

It would be no harder to enforce than any other rule on content.

Now, it may not be a popular idea, but I don't think it's without merit.  There have been times when I've experienced the same thing.  I was specifically avoiding threads or forums that might have given me the results I didn't yet want to see, but they were posted in the titles and I see them on the Last Post column of the main page.  I don't like it, but I not pushing for something if the majority is against it.  Though realistically, it isn't a big inconvenience to just keep it out of the title.

You can say it's a consequence of being on the site but if there was will, there's no reason this couldn't be done.

How would the moderators enforce it though?  Wouldn't they have to be aware of every sporting event, every day, so if one comes up they can recognize it?

In theory perhaps, but all I've ever seen done is the UFC or football (real football, not soccer!).  In practice though I suspect the moderators would become aware of transgressions in the same manner they are now, people using the notify moderator buttons.  I'm curious what the ratio is for moderators discovering forbidden content on their own to being notified by members.  I suspect the latter has the greater number.

It's rare that I don't see the events that I would worry about when they first air, so this isn't even something that has affected me but a handful of times.  Perhaps it isn't prevalent enough to warrant change.  But it would be a such a simple adjustment for people to not post spoilers in the thread titles that I don't think it meaningfully infringes upon the authors.

I think more people should weigh in with their opinion to see if their is enough support for the idea.

After I reread the original suggestion, the script idea has some merit, but I don't know how difficult it would be to code, and I'm not someone who'd impose upon Ythan to do this.

But perhaps if it was something that was made available that you had input your own tags into, a list of sorts, that would then put the spoiler cover over offending posts.  Then people that were worried about the UFC could collaborate and come up with lists that they could share.  If the cover was made a different color, red for example, then you'd know that it was something you wanted hidden instead of something hidden by the author.

This would shift all the responsibility to the user who wishes to remain in the dark and no more work for the moderators.  Also, then random individual posts in unrelated or related threads could be hidden in addition to the titles.  People could prevent more than just sporting events too.  You could even have different colors for different groups of tags.  Movies could be one color, sporting events another.  Anything you could tag could remain hidden unless you want to read it.  In fact I'd say new movies are what I've spoiled the most often.  As much as I love OTD and would resist any rule changes there, we know a lot of users like being a dick and I've often seen someone go out of their way to post spoilers of a new movie.  Even doing it in a surreptitious manner that you wouldn't notice until it was too late.

I just think it would be futile. Unlike, say, posting scat in the Pub, a game spoiler is really only going to effect a handful of people. Especially since those threads don't stay on the front page long.

So I go in the Pub, see the results of a game I DVRed or whatever, and I report the thread. So what? I already know the outcome and there are so few, if any other, people who care that it's pointless.

If there are more people this affects than I realize then sure, but I doubt it.

Well, you might not be the first to see it or even if you were, everyone wouldn't have to suffer.

If the tag/script system was implemented and kept up-to-date, then it should be able to catch most if not all of the offending posts.  But perhaps a combination of the two would be better.  That way, if a title or something is noticed (or notified) then a moderator could edit it.  That way one system or the other would take up the slack that the one might miss.

More people than you realize might actually care, but don't want to make a big deal of things.  I was definitely in this boat until I saw this thread.

Re: We need some rules on sporting events [Re: HagbardCeline]

I'll bite since it seems no other mods/admins have yet.
I don't think this is a good idea for a couple reasons:

1. The mods already have enough BS to deal with enforcing the rules. It would be hard to enforce, and quite frankly a pain in the ass. We already have enough on our plates without having to edit out thread titles and contents from threads about sporting events in the past ~48 hours or whatever it is. I wouldn't want to have to deal with it personally. Perhaps other mods might feel different.

2. Why should we?
IMO, a big part of message boards is as a source of NEWS. I know for me, I get ~90% of my news through the Shroomery. A lot of times people come here just to get the latest info on X topic.
All the time there are threads discussing the latest ____ TV show, or who just won the championship or whatever. Should we now lock/delete/edit all those threads, thereby limiting everyone else to participate in that discussion, just so a small minority of people can avoid "spoilers", because they didn't want to watch it in real time?

In my opinion, no... that would be silly.

If you don't want spoilers from the latest UFC match, you probably shouldn't be on an internet message board, or watch TV, or read the paper. It is inevitable that everything will be spoiled here, as soon as something is released.. sometimes even before. Some people don't even watch TV and come here just to find out the results of certain things, or get other people's opinions. That is, after all.. what a message board is for. ESPECIALLY with something like UFC... people are going to talk about it. Who am I to stop them?
All some people would have to do is open up their internet browser and have their homepage set to yahoo to get the latest spoiler.

So are we going to now censor all sport-related results threads now for EVERYONE just to appease to a small minority that somehow feel they are missing out because they didn't want to/couldn't watch it live? And HOW would we go about determining what should be censored and what should not? That could get messy in a hurry.

If you are THAT obsessed with a sporting event you TIVOd, and you are intent on not knowing the results until after you've watched it..... then watch it first before browsing.
It's not OUR responsibility to censor the results of events just to ease the minds of a couple sports fanatics. We are not here to censor "new" news.
That's like if a big event happens in your neighborhood, and everyone is all talking about it when you get home. You don't know the whole story, so are you going to tell everyone to shut up about it? Stick your head in the sand if you don't want any information.

With all due respect and all.
Just not something I could get behind.

I think the best you could do, is try to appeal to people to use spoiler tags more often when talking about stuff like this, and not post the results of things in thread titles.
But to expect the mods to do it

Though that's just like, my opinion and stuff brahs. As a longtime mod who hates enforcing arbitrary rules.

Well, first, I think the script idea would probably be better as I explained, so mods wouldn't have any related duties, but I'll still play advocate here and address your points.

No one has suggested that anything other than thread titles be subject to edit.  You're the one who's injected thread contents into your proposed duties.  People would still be free to discuss whatever they want.  Instead of seeing a thread title saying Anderson Silva beat the fuck out GSP it could be changed to Anderson Silva vs GSP.  An edit like that takes what, 15 seconds?  Once there is one thread about it, most people will see that and instead of making their own they post in the one already made.  Perhaps every once in a while you have 2, maybe 3, redundant threads about it.  And the pub has 15 mods to distribute that 45 seconds (assuming 3 threads) around.  Even if it took a few minutes, there are 15 of you and even assuming people wouldn't adjust their posts to the new rules I don't see how it would be so time consuming.  No offense, but I can't imagine that would be as tough of a job as you're making it sound.

How much time as a moderator do you actually spend editing posts in any given day?  Isn't that one of your main and most time consuming functions?

Of course it would also be as you suggested that people would be encouraged to not posts spoilers in thread titles, and after a small adjustment period, most users would follow the rules.  So what's another rule that was added to the pub, say editing out derogatory terms out of thread titles?  How much time a week do you and the other mods spend enforcing that rule (not posts, just titles).

Anyway, none of what has been proposed would limit anyone's access to information.  And why would you describe this as an arbitrary rule?

And come to think of it, remember a time not long ago when you campaigned for change for users who didn't want to see a certain type of post?  It was the P&S forum and some members there didn't like to have their ideas challenged.  Were they told to avoid posting and that they should stick their heads in the sand?  That this is a message board where people are free to question the beliefs of others and that it was inevitable that some users would be posting things contrary to what they wanted to see?

You fought to have an entirely new sub-forum for these people to post freely.  And subjected the user who liked debate to censorship.  Not to mention a whole new sub-forum to moderate.

Why was that idea better exactly?
