PCing with polyfill jars
    #1228050 -

Can you leave the lid screwed on? Also, when inoculating can one stick the needle through the polyfill, or would another hole (covered by tape) be desirerable?

thnx  :smirk:

You can have the lids screwed on tight as the air exchange is taken care of by the polyfil. You should have another hole to innoculate in as putting the needle through the polyfil will increase the possibility of contams because anything that lands on the polyfil (which will be moist and will attract dust and contams on the top) will be pushed down into the jars. Also you will be disturbing the polyfil and could possible dislodge it which would be a pain in the ass getting back in place without contaminating it. With a new hole you can innoculate then tape it up right after no fuss no problem

Duct tape survives ok but it is a bitch to peel off.

I do this but I dont stick the needle through the polyfil. I slide the needle on one side of the polyfil in between the hole and the polyfil. It is quick, does not disturb the polyfil, and I have had great success with the method. I always wipe the surface of my lid, as close to the injection site as possible, with plenty of alcohol.

Drill a 1/4 or 1/2 inch hole in the jar lid. Grab yourself a suitable sized hunk of polyfil. Twist a corner of the chunk into a point. Insert the Polyfil through the hole. Pull the Polyfil very firmly Then give it a gentle tug in the 'reverse' direction to sort of 'set' it. Trim it with a sharp pair of scissors to leave about a 1/4-3/8 inch on each side. Inject straight through. Satisfaction guaranteed.

>>>added: leave the lids screwed on tight.
You can swab the Polyfil with alcohol prior to injection if you want.

Isnt the purpose of the polyfil to allow you to poke the needle right through, and have it reseal on its own? If you're going around the polyfil, there's no real point to it being there!
I make my jars alla birdseed tek, but PF TEk would be fine, you can even omit the verm barrier as far as I'm concearned. Then I put a layer of foil over the mouth, grab a wad of polyfill and sqish it into the foil, causing it to sqish down and form a convex bubble. Then I put the lid on top of that. Screw on the ring and voila. Just poke a whole through the lid with a nail and maybe toss some tape over that. Then when you first innoclulate you poke through the foil, breaking the seal. But when you pull the syring out, the pollyfill seals it back up.

I stick the needle through the tape and then tape over that hole. I'm not using polyfill however. I am experiementing with RTV silicone sealant as a self-sealing/sterilizable hole.
