Another Birdseed question

OK, I've read through like 60 pages of search reesults, and havent found what I'm looking for. That being said: What happens if you case Birdseed directly, as in I dont spawn poo or straw with it first, just break up, cover and go.

I only ask because, honestly, I'm running out of Poo, and I'm not having much luck with it anyway. And now that it's a constant -10 out side with 3 feet of snow on the ground I can't easily get any more. I'm not sure where to get straw (all I have is aged hay, which I'm thinking of experimenting with..) but I hear thats not much good. I have a ton of BS jars ready top go. Is it even worth attempting to case them straight? or will I get a tray full of abhorts like my old poo?

thanks bilge, what kind of yeilds are you getting? any moisture concerns? are you getting decent sized fruits with this method? like I said, I have a ton of jars ready to go, enough so that there will definatly be more then one 1pt jar per casing.

Yeah, i got the same problem, i have some hay/straw,, the golden shit.. what ever you call it i can never remember. and i have access to a cow farm, but the shit pile i assume ,, is frozen solid!

i can pick the fresh shit, but problem is that it's too FRESH. It would need sit and sun dry for a while wich is kind of hard to do this time of year!!!!

so for now, bird seed and hay is all i can do. arghhhhh

this will be my first time with birdseed but the success of others on this board is what pointed me in that direction. preparation was quick and easy and colonization was really fast. i case this weekend and i'll post results once things come to fruition.

I recommend that you Mix the colonized birdseed with an equal amount of moistened steralized vermiculite prior to casing. Birdseed isn't the best at retaining moisture. I usually yield about 1-1.5 dry ounces over 3 flushes per quart jar using this method.

i recently switched form pf tek to birseed, and it works very well. i get about an ounce per qt jar. Moisture is very tricky with bs, a little too much and water and your jars won't colonize. I'd recommend soaking for 12-24hrs, simmering for 1hr(this is optional, but i think it helps), straining for 1-2 hrs, and pcing at 15 psi for at least 1hr. don't try and use the teks that say to just add the water to the jars when you pc. Water content is a very difficult thing to get right this way.

I just add water to the jars before I PC. Never had a problem with water content and I have done quite a few birdseed jars.

lucky bastard!!

I'm doing mine a'la 6T, and works very well, i boiled seed and water last night, left it on the stove overnight, will rinse and strain tonight, and PC.

jars go from injection to done in 6 to 8 days flat!

6T WBS Tek (Wild Bird Seed) Bulk Spawn Preparation Method.

WBS consists primarily of white millet. It is often a combination of white, red millet & milo with a small percentage of sunflower seeds and sometimes tiny amounts of crushed corn. Some expensive brands are coated with a fungicide. For use as spawn material, treated WBS is not advisable.

You can find untreated WBS in 5 -10 & 20 pound bags, at low prices at most large chain grocery stores, or chain type pet supply stores. For instance, PetsMart has 40 pound bags for around $9.

Simply place whatever quantity you intend to use in a plastic pot, tub or bucket. Bear in mind, dry seed will expand about 20 to 25% - after it absorbs its capacity of water. Add tap water & soak the seed overnight. A 8 to 12 hour soak is fine. Seed soaked longer will begin to ferment. But, is still usable after soaking 24 to 36 hours.

There is no need to remove any floating husks, or sunflower seeds. These add lignin ( a good thing) & do not harbor any more possible contams than does the millet. It is all going to get thoroughly sterilized - anyway.

Once soaked, simply rinse the seed very thoroughly in a colander, or strainer. Then allow it to drain - WELL. As in 30 or more minutes. If it is drips - one drop. It is not drained - WELL.

Load pint or quart jars ? full, apply internal filter disk, material, polyfil or whatever method you use allow gas exchange through a ? or 3/8 inch hole in the lid. Screw lid on tight & back it off ? turn. Place a double layer of paper coffee filters over the lid & jar top, held down by a thick rubber band. Place the jars in the PC.

PC at 15 pounds for a full 60 minutes. 90 minutes is better, if you have the time. Allow the PC pressure to drop to zero & let it cool a bit. Open while still hot & remove jars. The paper coffee filters will dry almost instantly, when the PC is opened. Tighten lids (if necessary), shake jars to insure there are no clumps of seed inside. Place jars inside the oven on a rack, to cool, overnight. External coffee filters simply add another layer of protection to the jars content.

Once cooled to room temperature, store in a clean cardboard box - until used. Using them sooner than later is preferable. Note: This method was done in an All American PC. Some brands with a weighted pressure system require more internal water & it may be advisable to also cover the coffee filters with tin foil- while PC'ing, so no excess boiling water gains entry into the jars. Simply remove the tinfoil when you remove the jars from the PC.

I skip the soak, simmer for 30 mins, rinse for about 15 mins, drain for another 30 mins. load, PC and go... I now have an incubator full of nearly colonized jars.

I currently have a casing in my chamber that was made with about a full quart of birdseed, cased with straight verm. I always spawn my jars to poo, but I'm just fucking around with it. It looks fine...never done it, so I don't know the size of the fruits, but it'll work. Deeper substrate will get you bigger fruits.
I'm all about poo though, so if you can get it down  :grin:
