Cultivating Grifola frondosa, Laetiporus sulpherus parasitically?
    #12196521 -

Recently I've been think of cultivating maitake and chicken of the woods mushrooms using some kind of logs. After some reading however I discovered that the ecology of these fungi are actually parasites as well as saprophytes.

In my back yard I have an oak tree with some roots that have surfaced from ground. They seem like just the place where maitake would grow. Here's some pics;

I know a small mushroom farm in south Carolina which can sell me plug spawn of a true laetiporus sulpherus which can grow on hardwood. All the other vendors have only laetiporus conifericola, sister species, which does not like hardwoods like oak.

Can these mushrooms be cultivated without actually killing the tree?

you should NOT sacrifice a live tree for a few shrooms
and yes they are bad for trees and will eventually cause grief for yourself or future home owners

plus I dont think knockin up a live tree is that easy....use half  or fully buried logs....or stumps

from what I understand Laetiporus colonizes trees that are already weak and keeps them alive for years or even decades with the phyto-like hormones it produces, in exchange for the sap it 'borrows' from the tree

Laetipourus cincinatus turned my oak tree to mush at the base.....and it fell hard
my dog shit his pants....and I got lots of pics of the inside of a chicken tree
if your wanting laetipourus to eat...mother nature provides plenty in the fall
