growing maitake (grifola frondosa) in ny
    #9283453 -

Asked this in mushroom cultivator and it was recommended to post here for my answer... Would it be possible to grow maitake outdoors in lower ny area, like 30 min out of the city?

Seeing as they occur wild in your area, I would say it seems likely.  They tend to grow on the roots of oaks, so keep your eyes on those about... two months ago.

When growing these outdoors, GGMM suggests burying inoculated oak logs or sawdust blocks.  I'm growing out some maitake spawn now with that in mind.  Logs are starting to pile up in my garage, and I get fussed at by housemates almost every day!

I would grow them indoors but I don't go to school in NY. I want start some for my mom, cuz she's an acupuncturist and is into alternative and natural medicine, but thanks for the info good to know that it's possible to do. Maybe I'll set her up with a little indoor grow.

Four months?!  Wow, that's a long time!  I understand they can be difficult to get to fruit indoors.

I just started a couple of maitake grain jars.  One was a mixture of sawdust and rye, and the other was straight rye.  The rye jar seems to have stalled (grains too dry?), while the sawdust jar fully colonized in a week... so they can colonize quickly.  How do you get them to fruit?

for starters you should spawn them to sawdust bags, then you just wait.  its very easy it just takes time thats all.  i should take some pictures but my stupid camera's battery cover is broke so i have to hold it in place when i take a photo....such a pain in the mushy

I put them in the fridge for a week and then put them in the FC.
