Gypsum yes or no

I'm already going to use crushed oyster shell in my casing mix, is it still necessary to you the small amount of gypsum in the mix?

First of all: What do you mean, when you use casing mix. Just to be clear. Do you mean a substrate you spawn colonized grains or cakes to or indeed a non-nutritious casing layer you apply to already colonized substrates?

You are correct SoCal. I was really high and a little nervous. It's like my 3rd post. “I am... a mushroom; On whom the dew of heaven drops now and then.”

Do me a favor and elaborate what exactly you are talking about. Substrate. So much we have. In what form? PF jars, bulk substrate? If bulk substrates, what exactly etc.
I need info to be able to help

Sorry, sorry. I'm going to be using bulk rye grain for the substrate and my question was about the non-nutritive casing layer that I'm going to apply to my colonized grain. If I'm already using crushed oyster shell in the casing for calcium is it really necessary to add Gypsum to the mix. I really haven't found much info about the pro's and con's of Gypsum. Thanks for your patience.

Gypsum is always a good additive. While oyster shells are used in order to adjust the PH, gypsum is used because it boost growth by adding calcium and sulfur, as well as to give the whole thing a better texture.
Personally I do use up to 10% (by volume of the peat) gypsum in casing layers. It has shown to be a really good thing to do.
For the future you probably want to spawn your colonized grains to a bulk substrate for better results.

Yes to gypsum in bulk substrates or grain jars, but don't use to much at most 10% by volume. Cause if you use to much your substrate will turn solid like a brick lol.
