Gypsum as casing buffer...
    #3569095 - 01/01/05 10:57 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I have some plaster of paris, which I hear is mostly Gypsum. However, it has no ingredients label, so I dunno.

Anyway, could I use Gypsum in place of hydrated lime?

No.

Theres info in the FAQ's on what you can use (calc carb, chalk, crushed oyster shells, crushed eggshells, ect).

It CAN be used in compost, dont know whatfor but I guess for PH purposes.
Looks like suitable for casing too then. IMHNO.

gypsum is calcium sulfate, not carbonate. you can use a little bit when prepping rye jars apparently to keep the kernels from sticking together. haven't tried this so I don't know how well it works. When gardening in soil, it does buffer PH in relatively the same way as CaCO3. I don't know how well it works in casing though.

According to GG&MM by Stamets a casing mix can be 10 parts Peat, 1 part chalk and 1 part gypsum.

Quote:

Gypsum, calcium sulfate, may affect pH by 1/2 of a point.
Its pH-altering ability is minor until the sulphur evolves into
sulfuric acid. Calcium and sulphur are essential elements in
mushroom metabolic processes. If the substrate is lacking in these
essential elements, yields are adversely affected.
