Auto-SummaryThe author is a musician who values the use of psychedelics in their creative process, but doesn't believe they're necessary for true creativity. They argue that psychedelics allow them to tap into a deeper, more authentic energy that flows through them, but this connection can also be achieved through other means, such as meditation or simply being present in the moment. The author distinguishes between "ego-driven" ideas and "heart-driven" ones, suggesting that psychedelics help bypass the ego and access a more profound, universal understanding. While they acknowledge that psychedelics can facilitate this connection, they also emphasize the importance of hard work and self-awareness in maintaining creativity and tapping into one's true potential. Ultimately, the author sees their use of psychedelics as a means to an end, a way to access a deeper sense of reality and connection that can be cultivated through practice and dedication.
the following post is very haphazardly composed...
seek said: I didn't even think that up, it just came to me out of nowhere, fully realized without me having to flesh it out or anything. <-- That's the quality of psychedelic thinking. It just comes to you, complete. No brainstorming. No drafts. Just the complete idea. As if it were put in your head by a pink laser beam.
that "flowing through you" thing is exactly why psychedelics are so important to me when it comes to music. I can really tell the difference between somebody who has energy just flowing out of them, and somebody who doesn't. I can also tell by lyrics and energy when a songwriter has been deep and when they haven't.
Personally I don't settle for less, and demand that my music has some real power to it that comes from beyond me. Yet at the same time, it does come from me, and once you've experienced that energy enough, it just flows through you... maybe to a lesser extent than while you are tripping, but it still does.
So in a way I guess I am saying that yes, psychedelics are necessary to achieve truly doin thangs, but you don't have to always be on them. You just have to strive to let go, in order to keep that energy flowing through you.
Of course there are plenty of incredible musicians that have not done psychedelics, but at the same time there is a certain something that truly cannot be had unless a person has experienced that.
and after enough of those experiences, every moment becomes pretty psychedelic in it's own right.
but I wouldn't say that psychedelics make you more creative, they just allow you to be more in touch with what is actually somehow valid, and that really helps to make true magic happen. So if you are anything like me, I think that is why they play such an important role in your creativity. It's not that you aren't creative enough without them, it's just that real and valuable energy is more present with their aid, and that is something that is important to what you create
Quote: But I don't know if it's possible to achieve the same level of unique insight, associations, and original ideas that psychedelics provide you.
in a way, it's not
Quote: How can you enjoy the fact that the only time you're on a roll is when you're being helped by a drug? Doesn't that make you feel like "Without drugs, I'm not creative, funny, or interesting at all." My self-worth suffers precisely because I've done amazing things on drugs that I'm not sure I could do while sober. It feels like a competition between the tripping me and the sober me.
It's not so much that you are being helped by a drug, it's that everything that removes you from what is real, is sort of removed. Because you are thinking less, and "being" more.
Economy of motion, something that often happens while playing on psychedelics, is simply being in tune with energy, and not distorting it so much by over-thinking about everything you are doing. It's kind of like doing by not trying, just doing. It's the "trying" that is holding you down, due to lack of clarity and connection to those energies, subconsciously feeling unsure of what is what...and that is something that can be overcome
It sounds to me like you are somewhat like me, and don't like to settle for lesser. It's not that you can't do those things while sober, it's just that you haven't found "it" enough yet, to carry it over to while you are sober. It sounds like you demand to be real, and that is why I demand psychedelic influence in my music, but I also understand that being sober is a part of being real as well.
So really, it isn't that you need to be on drugs to be awesome, it's just that you need to find your awesomeness, which may take psychedelics, but can definitely be carried over into the sober realm once you really find yourself.
Every desire of every being is somehow wanting to be "one" again, to be somehow real, and a person ingesting the world definitely gets you closer to that oneness... it may take some time to really get familiar with the part of you that is missing, and is somehow [partly] found while on psychedelics, but it is possible.
Personally I feel like it is a neverending battle or quest, and its importance to me, the importance of truly transmitting real energy, is something that seems to separate me from most people...
you said "Like an idea so far out that you would never come up with it in your life if you never did drugs".. that's because the idea without having done drugs, would be an idea from the ego, a limited view of what is what, just a thought in your head, so in many cases the idea just wouldn't strike the heart of things the same way
but there does come a point where you just feel so connected to everything, that profound ideas can hit you even while not on drugs. Does it really take drugs? I think it just takes not being kept apart from everything by your own mind. Great ideas never happen when you just sit there and try to force them, because all of those ideas are from your own mind
true creativity comes from the unknown; it just happens. But it doesn't necessarily take drugs for that to happen. Inspiration can come from anything in the world around you, as it has for many creative people in the past. It could be almost dying, a war, seeing a person executed, being out in nature, seeing a child, anything. Anything that bypasses your own ego and somehow or another connects you to everything
and true talent comes from hard work. Drugs may make it easier to bypass what is blocking you from your own talent, but it really comes down to you, whether to work hard at maintaining that awareness or not. Talent does not require drugs, but that ability to go with the flow of economical energy. Some people approach it studiously through traditional methods, some people just naturally feel it more... either way it does require effort on your own part
Of course, I do feel like psychedelics help people simply "feel it", but it seems like those people were predisposed to "feeling it" anyway. And I can tell you from observation of some of the people I think are incredibly talented, that they don't have to be ON drugs to give a stellar performance, and don't have to be ON drugs to have a good idea. But I feel tha it does help to have those experiences as a reference point to know what is really worth something and what isn't
anyways, I've lost my train of thought here. True power/energy/magic is absolutely important to me. It's what I look for in music and it's what I make it a quest to be able to create. So does it take psychedelics? In a way, I'd say yes, it does... but you don't have to be consistently on them, you just need to develop a sensibility to feeling what is real. You might need another experience when your ego starts to grow prevalent again and you lose your connection to everything...
does this predicament suck? personally I feel like it is the only way. It doesn't suck, it isn't a crutch (but I suppose it can be), and drugs don't give you talent...
you either strive hard to be as real as can be, or you don't. And if you do, then the experience will never leave you
I hear the buzz don't last that long
...hear the buzz don't last that long
I could not forget the song
cannot forget
how long it was
if you were dreaming you'd know
how long the night was
