Decline in Culture

Ok, is it just me or is the West facing a decline in culture? It seems in the past there were more individuals that we glorified that actually deserved it.

I mean, look how we've changed. Instead of Tupac and Public Enemy, we have Lil Wayne and T Pain. Instead of Bob Dylan and Rage Against the Machine, we have Nickelback and Hinder. Instead of listening to intelligent, well thought out writers like Cornel West and Noam Chomsky, we listen to self righteous self-promoters like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh.

Can someone please tell me what has happened to people like Huey Newton, George Jackson, Che Gevaura, Gandhi, Abbie Hoffman, Malcolm X, and John Lennon? Can someone please tell me some similar individuals alive today?

Che Gevaura was a murderer and I hate how Hollywood put him out to be some sort of great guy, fuck that! How can you even compare him along with Gandhi and Malcolm X?

I don't know man.  If you look at pop culture since the late 70s, it has been very commercialized, and not much depth to it.

On the whole, it seems we are becoming a more stupid people, but I think that the mainstream has always been dumbed down for the masses.

There are lots of subcultures which still admire intelligence.
  I turn to Radiohead for modern-intelligent musical and philosophical genius.
There are also groups like Mattafix who are creating new, intelligent music.
  There are artists who push boundaries, you just have to look for them.
I think these folks are more luminescent in later years.
  It is hard to see the subculture when you are immersed in the culture.

We don't have a hunter s. thompson , ginsberg, kerouac,

  we need someone like that.

I don't think culture is ever in decline it just changes. Things can't be the same forever. Also I think a big part of it is that we are educated to fit in the mold. We are taught that there is only so few ways to be successful and so we don't see as much people trying to think out side the box. Give it a decade or two I imagine things will be even much different then today, seems to me that history seems to go in cycles in terms of great thinkers.

in these "democracies"
we have no say over Bank Loans (mortgages) or Insurance, and you need insurance for a Mortgage, which is pretty mental.
This means that Insurance companies are actually dictating what we can or can not do.
it is a dictatorship with formalities galore customizing the protection industry.
Note
the mafia is the traditional example of a protection industry that also loans money.
what we now have established within the legal system is a kind of protection industry to protect money and to protect us from ourselves and this protection denies us our rights and democracy.
weird.
anyway
if you speak out you may have your job opportunities removed, you mortgages denied or worse: so we are led to believe.

so who wants to sing about this?

With the information age our attention span is growing shorter and shorter, there simply isn't the commercial demand for truly insightful and poignant figures.

What goes up most come down.

  I think we see a pattern in pop culture,

Thought Vs. Party.

  the late 60s to early 70s was about eastern influences, advances in western music, critical evaluation.

  the next generation backlashed against this, "We just want to party, and have a good time" ,

  and we saw the emergence of Disco, followed by the Hair Metal of the late 70s to the late 80s.

in the 90s...

  and then we saw a re-emergence of more thought based music with the new avenue of hip-hop, and we electronic music being used not for "dance" so much as mind expansion like Floyd did.  and we saw the emergence of Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead being very popular. 

in televsion, we had "in living color", and other shows emerge

  and then in the 00s, after 9-11, we saw a return to the party "mode" the sheer dominance of "crunk" rap,  and the dominance of reality television.

  so hopefully, in the 10s, we will see a return to more thought-based music and art, and culture.

I assume it's because they've pretty much been castrated by the name dropping of their peers who've managed to become immortal, while they just hang out at the Shroomery. :smirk:
