Filter Membranes Instead of Complete Syringe Filters?
    #12070931 -

Syringe filters can be expensive.  I have found the membranes
for cheaper here and there.

There are many materials that appear to withstand autoclaving
and/or pressure cooking.  PVDF seems to be among the most
durable and cost effective.

Is there any great benefit to having the filter housing?

Will contact with the filter membrane from shaking be a
contamination issue?  Clog up the filter?

Is there another membrane material that is more appropriate?

It's me, but I really don't see the point of buying expensive fancy technologic filters to hot glue them on home-made lids…

If you are a pro commercial grower, you might want the very best, but for the home grower, tyvek or a puff of polyfill will certainly do more than the trick.

Sorry, don't mean to be rude or what; just throwing somes thoughts for the discussion

If you want "homemade" results, then use "homemade" techniques.

Besides, where's the line between a "homey" and a "pro?"  What
about semi-pro?

I have found such fancy technological solutions to be convenient,
highly durable after many, many times through the pressure cooker,
and with a stellar success rate (of no contamination).

I hate contaminants in my projects.  Even once in a while.  I do quite
well with my still air box but I will be building a homemade positive
pressure flow hood soon!

My success rate has been 100% with my syringe
filter/vacutainer stopper lids.  I cannot recall any jar contamination
since I stopped using the old style tyvek lids.

I guess it all depends on what you want to accomplish and at what
scale.  I may not be a mycologist, but I do have a science degree.

A couple more years of reading, some real lab projects, and I will be
a mycologist...

Never had any jar contaminated with polyfill…

But I don't have inoculated thousands neither
