i need help choosing subwoofer drivers for sound re-enforcement

a friend and I want to make a project out of making a subwoofer. size is not an issue. we're going to build the box ourselves.

only trouble is we have no idea how to choose drivers. we don't even know what kind of frequencies we want to work with!

i was talking to the sound guy at a local venue and he said his system was good down to 25hz (135db) and honestly i wasn't that impressed. they were doing live music though, so i seriously doubt the subs we working too hard.

looking for random information and suggestions.

right now one of my main concerns is how we can get a high power thump at 70-90, but still shake the shit out of the room (20 > ?).

my initial idea was to try and have a 12" paired with an 18", the 12"inch for 50-100, the 18" for 50 and below. my friend says that could produce fucked up harmonics and extra phase issues though.

i dunno, also we're pretty concerned with having the bass be as tight as we can afford all the way down (low distortion and clear transients?). we're planning on a sealed box design.

give me suggestions!

in all honesty, it doesnt really matter what woofer you have. it all depends on the harmonics of the box and how its built.

i dunno if its thats true. i'm pretty sure the box has to be built around the driver you choose.

and i'm talking about building something like this:
