is this polyfil? what next?
    #1179703 -

hi all. thanx for bearing with me this far. today i bought fluval 2+ polyester filter pads in a pet shop- it says "ideally suited as an underwater medium to filtering out extremely fine suspended particles and contaminates".

first q: is this okay as a 'polyfil filter' for my first grain jars? i presume yes, tho i know that some fishtank filters are specially designed to encourage growth of some bacteria as beneficials to fishtanks...

second q: assuming it is okay, how do i use it? it comes in 4"x3" squares (1/2" thick) - do i cut out portions and *somehow* attach them to the jar lids? inside or outside? using what? Help!

I got some fake snow during the chistmas season which works. You can probably get some now at a clearance sale.

in the local office depot they sell Dupont Tyvek Envelopes which can be cut up. i am performing a birdseed experiment with tyvek using a small hole in the lid as for polyfill, trying to avoid the drying-out problem as seen in Anno's link. i will report results some day.

I was wondering. Do you think I can replace polyfil with cotton?

No, when it gets wet (and it will) it will harbor contaminants easier.

hmm, sounds like many are having the same problems as me. no walmart, home depot or lowes in UK, by the way.

when i bought my fish filters ('Polyester Filter Pads') there were some others nearby that specifically said 'to encourage the growth of bacterial colonies to aid your filtration' or suchlike - through the packet they looked pretty similar, maybe a little yellower as i recall. obviously i passed these right by.

i think that with what i have (premoulded pads), i'd have to pull/tease apart before clumping it back together - this can only be harmful to a structural filter. i've since noticed on the side of the packet, it advertises 2 other aquarium filter packets:'foam pads for biological and mechanical filtration' ( :smile:but i didn't see these on the shelves ) and 'special carbon filter pads for removal of discolouration, dyes and harmful substances' (don't remember seeing these, either. all are designed for wet /underwater use.

*bump*  :  who knows where in the UK i can buy tyvek or the same polyfil that is referenced / linked to above?

it sounds like a small difference in source material can make the big difference between installing a cleaning filter, and accidentally installing a contamination nest.

i want to use this stuff not only to cover small holes in jar lids, to let colonising grains breathe, but also to cover a couple of windows in my terrarium to reduce humidity in there.  i know where to get tyvek on the net (kitemaking shop, $2.50 a sheet plus $15 delivery to UK) but surely in a city the size of london....?

*bump bump*  come on UK boys: ganja? froggy? jimbob? boo? erbaliza? biotek? metalchimp? prophet?cookdandbombd?
someone must know where i can get this stuff
