a blanket probably has pollyfill in it and not cotton. a pillow will certainly will have pollyfill.and to answer you first question its for filtratioon and to help maintain proper humidity.you cant just have open holes because your substrtae will dry out.well what are you doing a monotub or a fruiting chamber ?

then yes you need polyfill or tyvek. due to reasons i stated above. a monotub is supposed to be set and forget. tahts imposible with no FAE
