2 - 3.5 inches. Buy a hole saw to make perfect circles.

on a any monotub you'll need 8 holes at minimum; 4 on each large side.

2 at the top to let fresh air spill in and 2 at the bottom near the casing layer so the CO2 can spill out.

The smaller the holes the more you can place, but using the 8 hole method closer to 2" is better (easier to maintain humidity without spraying, etc.)

I have already decided that I'm stepping down to mono tubs because I just cant keep up with the greenhouse,I have been reading all I can find on them and most all seem to recommend 8 holes as described above.I do wonder if it would be beneficial to have more small holes than just 8 big ones... :strokebeard:

IMO thats way too many holes for a tub that small...i have about ten tubs that size and i have four decent size holes one on each side of the tub..that many holes will allow for too much FAE which obviously means not enough humidity, Oh and i would really reccomend duct tape or some sort of dark tape around the bottom so that you do not get side pinning...but back to the original question....for the 17 gallon tub i would place 6 3 inch holes on each large side of the tub and that should do u just fine!..a 17 gallon tub is decent size so ur gunna need a little more than 4 holes on the whole thing...hope that helps a little. and i guess more smaller holes would work the same but cutting a bunch of holes can be a pain so less bigger ones serves the same purpose but is just easier.

Humidity is OK - The holes are so many because it stays in a very humid place - the outside humidity is 85%. And the ducktape is still missing, because I put it on near full colonization to be able to see how things are going before that. On this tub it will be put today in fact.

Anyway, this is offtopic. I just wanted to encourage Blut with a picture of a monotub :cheer:

i once went overboard on a monotub..thought a whole shitload of holes would be awesome if i could keep the humidity up....dried the shit out of my poo. too many holes leads to too much FAE leads to no humidity as it has been said

interesting creation:

how much FAE really goes on with all that stuffing? The auto FAE method described here makes alot more sense. The need for free flow of air seems to trump the need for filtration at the fruiting stage. And, if some degree of air filtration is still needed, wouldn't dura-pore tape, tyvek, filter disks, etc. be more efficient?

There is a difference betwen a monotub and a FC for trays.

To answer your question..like i said earlier tooo much FAE will occur in a tub like that one...as far as dura-pore tape and tyvek and stuff...it technically would be the same, they are good filters and these materials also provide good air exchange..but when u stuff polyfill into those holes this creates an even bigger barrier for anything that might affect your grow...i just like polyfill because a huge bag cost basically nothing and is very easy tp use...but that got my experamental juices flowing so when my tubs are done this time around im guna try a few different materials(polyfill-Dura-pore and tyvek) and see which produces the best reasults...I will let all you guys know how it goes!

I have tried monotubs with micropore tape sealed holes. Air exchange with these is much worst than with polifyll, but it still works.

I fuggin hate polyfill so much :slitwrist::suicide: I still am fairly sure that it is the way to go on a mono/double tub,as a matter of fact I think it is the only instance in this hobby where it hasn't been beaten by tyvek or filter discs and such

I cut the holes in mine with a knife and they aren't even close to round. Still work great though.

See,I cant bring myself to do that,I'm just too much of a snob :snub: ..That is why I hate polyfill in the first place, cause it looks like shit,I know it makes no difference in the long run I'm just weird that way and its such a sloppy mess,I'm waiting on my tubs right now and I will be buying a hole saw to make the holes even if I return it the next day,the have to be round :nut:

You are absolutely right about the polyfill - it is disgustingly messy  But I have not found a suitable alternative either. If you find one, please drop a note. I'll keep looking too.

In fact..... as I write this something occurred to me. I'll post later when I try it.

no it was just a triaditional poo monotub with 50/50+ casing layer.
