Making several polyfill holes

Is it a good idea to make several holes for polyfill in the lids? The reason I ask is that my growth is a little slow with only one hole. I thought that making three polyfill holes might allow for more oxygen delivery and faster growth.

Before I just loosened the lids for aeration, this resulted in a ridiculous contamination rate. On the upside I would get almost complete permeation of the rye in 7-9 days. Using the polyfill technique, my jars are maybe 1/8 permeated at 4 days. The temperature is a steady 85-86 F.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

your growth should be fine with one hole. High co2 speeds up growth

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Its only been 4 days? Chill man.

Like tahoe said, one hole should be fine. You dont want oxygen to get to the jars, you want them to be able to release built up gases. If there is actually a problem with colonization, the problem is more likly water content. Mycelium also grows quicker the bigger it gets...and if you have whole grains, a shake to spread it around helps alot (at 15% and maybe again at 50-60ish% if needed).

Thanks guys, I know I'm a bit impatient..not exactly the ideal hobby for an impatient person! I'm surprised at how well the polyfill works at keeping contams out..I never would have guessed that it would effectively keep out spores.

The reason I thought 4 days was a little slow is because I've read grow logs where complete permeation is achieved in a little over a week.
