Depends on how contam paranoid you are. I flame between every 3 or 4 jars------------------

I think that alcohol should be alright to keep the needle clean between jars as long as you don't touch any of the needle with your finger or substrate or anything elsethat could possibly cause contamination. you can dip a q-tip into rubbing alcohol and then light it to produce a "clean" burning flame. Be sure not to let the flame burn after the alcohol has been used up, or the flame gets "dirty."

I swipe with a cotton swab soaked in alchohol between each hole. Works great for me. I rarely ever have contam in my jars.The Lizard,

Before I began this journey.. i decided i would try and be as informed as possible. i took both mycology, ad microbiology. all it takes is one little cell of a contaminant to lant on your substrate, and whammo.. you might be looking down the barrel of severe contamination. I.. meaning my uncle's teddy bears sister's cousin.. burns between inoculations.
the steps are as follows.. flame, inject.. flame inject. this way at least you can minumize damage. I (my cousins brother sisters, teddy.. ) have not had a single contqaminantion in over 3 dozen 1/2 pint jars.. (not bad right?) I'm waiting for my first births... grr------------------

take a baby food jar.. eat the food.. throw it out or whatever..then make a hole in the lid big enough to pull half of a cotton ball through but small enough to keep it from moving around too easily. Fill the baby food jar with rubbing alcohol, and make sure that the bottom of the cotton ball is touching the rubbing alcohol. the cotton ball with act as a wick and suck up more alcohol as it burns. the flame is really steady, and hot. This is cheap convenient.. and it is from stuff found around the house. ------------------

Lizard, you never use any type of flame for sterilyzation on your syringe? If i do use a alcohol burning do i need to wipe down the needle afterwards with something or just put the needle over the flame for a few seconds and then immediately innoculate? thanks

Nope, I've never took a flame to any of my needles. Why should I when a swipe of alchohol is all thats needed. I've always been concerned that heating the needle would kill the spores when injectng.
You people are overly paranoid when it comes to contamination. Yes, there is a need to be clean, but total sterility is impossible for most home cultivators. I mean just look at where these shrooms grow....Cow shit. Last time I checked, cow shit wasn't on the sterile list.
I've made well over 100 jars of substrate in the past 6 months, and I haven't had any contamination in my jars. I even make my own syringes without a flowhood or any expensive equiptment, and still no contam in my jars.
Just use common sense and you'll be fine.

I'm not taking this personally or anything but i have the right to be parenoid. Twice now all of the jars in my batch have gone bad and if it happens again it might be the end of cultivation for me, but i just hope if i try hard enough i will not get any contams. thanks for the replys
