what instrument do you play/sing/etc.?

I play the clarinet well, I sing, and I am learning the mandolin just now (I already got the first half of a song after only trying for two or three days).

cool! i've always wanted to play mandolin, love the sound.

Just concentrate totally on the performing. Don't even try to show everything you can play, just the most easiest things that you know by heart. Then when you're familiar with the audience, you can do whatever you feel.  :goodluck:

why don't you start off easy, like dance with friends. It 'll be awkward at first but it'll get better when you 'practice' that more. Build up from there. Also Talk to your friends about it while doing it

good luck!

I am aweful at speaking one on one in my opinion, let alone groups. So take my advice with a grain or two, but I've heard that ToastMaster's is the way to go from profressionals.

Get a good soundcard for your computer, and a good microphone.  Download some of your favorite karaoke songs.  Learn to sing them into headphones.  Find a friend on skype, yahoo, or whatever messenger you have, call them, and sing your learned songs to them. Then start going and singing in front of people in karaoke clubs.  You will no longer be afraid after you do it a few times.  This is what I do.  Sing every night on skype to friends of mine, I got about 100 songs I do.  Sometimes I go out to karaoke bars.

I want to sing and play music and dance and shit. But I get all weirded out, and shy and suddenly CANNOT do it.

I know it's dumb, I even think I have talent, and none of the people i know would be rude enough to insult me even if I performed horrendously. None of that matters to my strange inhibitions though...

How can I get over my shyness, and step on stage?

I played several instruments over like 13 years at least, and got nervous to the point of almost throwing up about every third performance. I played in front of thousands.

My best, nerve free time is still drunk karaoke. Im not good or anything, but it just doesn't get me keyed up. Maybe ease into it with low pressure.

BTW i find shy incredibly sexy sometimes.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

The hard part is stepping onto the stage. The moment you start performing, I guarantee your nervousness quickly fades and disappears.

Im the same way in regards to performing in front of people

The few times I DO play music in front of people (sing, drums, guitar, etc) they always tend to say I have talent...it's just getting out there and playing in front of them that I have a hard time with.

Ignore your audience! They're just there to observe. Sure, they'll judge, but who cares. But to pull them into your performance will mess with you.  This works for me, anyway, but I play drums. Some performers need to engage the audience.

I feel like alcohol before performance is a bad idea. I mean, I've gone up on stage with a couple in me, but it's better to be sober for the sake of your material.

Other than that, if you haven't tried getting on stage yet, you should just get out there and do it. First time I got on stage I was nervous beforehand, but once I got on it just felt natural.

Also remember, you're gonna feel so much better if you got up and gave it your all, as opposed to performing with reservations about yourself and your material and not doing as well as you could have.

well maybe for you, alcohol isn't a good idea but i love it.
i play every week/weekend,all over the mid Atlantic
and always have something befor i go on stage just as a ritual and to calm my hands, its a great feeling when i first walk up to mic and say hello  to everybody as my band is getting ready to rock.
after years of gigging i still get nervous,EVERY TIME i get up there, every time!
a drink is not a bad thing IMO

The trick is to feed both off of their positive energy AND the anxiety it gives you.
