I'm a silly shy girl, and it feels dumb

I want to sing and play music and dance and shit. But I get all weirded out, and shy and suddenly CANNOT do it.

I know it's dumb, I even think I have talent, and none of the people i know would be rude enough to insult me even if I performed horrendously. None of that matters to my strange inhibitions though...

How can I get over my shyness, and step on stage?

take a class in some kind of performing arts so you aren't singled out, & so you get used to performing in front of people.

after that, performance anxiety can be a great feeling & adds to the excitement/experience of it all.

Are you any good? My GF has a masters in music and has been performing for over a decade but still gets nervous about it, if that helps!

No but seriously, do you already play an instrument, sing, dance, or any of the other various "performing" arts? because if you haven't developed a skill set for any of these yet, then how can anyone expect you to perform well? well at least for music, i guess singing can be much more of a natural talent. but learn then do! or if you want to pick it up and run with it... well then try to understand what is causing your fear of performing and just do it already.

personally I play percussion instruments, a skill that took me years to make worthwhile even practicing. can't say that I sing but I can say that i used to be pretty anxious about dancing at parties, high school dances, etc. but really it's better in the end to show what you've got and fuck it up, than to hide it and potentially suffocate a rightfully burning desire to step outside your comfort zone and LIVE

first get comfortable playing in front of small groups of people, like people you know... then when you feel comfortable, move on to something low-pressure like open mic, etc

most of all, just do it, a lot , and practice a lot

I was nervous as hell when I first started playing at music school...then I realized that the nervous factor disappears relative to how secure you feel with what you are playing, as well as how used to playing in front of people you are. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

start small and work your way up. Believing in yourself is key

i play keyboards. started in classical. did a lot of solo gigs and each time i was nervous beforehand. playing in bands got me over it. for one, the main attention goes to the front man so you don't have to sweat being up there alone.

if you want to be the front person though, i'd suggest taking acting technique or something like it. the other posters had some good ideas. the main thing is to get up there often enough so it stops feeling scary.

I feel like alcohol before performance is a bad idea. I mean, I've gone up on stage with a couple in me, but it's better to be sober for the sake of your material.

Other than that, if you haven't tried getting on stage yet, you should just get out there and do it. First time I got on stage I was nervous beforehand, but once I got on it just felt natural.

Also remember, you're gonna feel so much better if you got up and gave it your all, as opposed to performing with reservations about yourself and your material and not doing as well as you could have.

I play the clarinet well, I sing, and I am learning the mandolin just now (I already got the first half of a song after only trying for two or three days).
