Going by World Spirits post here I'm assuming that he's asking wether he can test for psilocybin using this chemical, it's just used for rehydrating and mounting dried material and checking for certain reactions in other genera, not the presence of active chemicals but please do make some micrographs, Inocybe species have quite interesting micro characters!

I guess I mixed up what does what for testing for the presence of psilocybin. I have p-dmab and my memory is telling me I'm looking for a color change, but to be quite frank, I have not read any clear instructions as to how to proceed and what to look for.

I think it's safe to say that anyone without access to a college laboratory with an experienced person using a GC/MS device isn't going to get to a beneficial point of knowledge.

I'm going to contact the colleges in my area tomorrow and see if I can get to the bottom of this species. If you are a chemistry student in Olympia and have access to the staff and lab I'd love to hear from you.

I found some mushrooms that were ID'd as Inocybe calamistrata earlier this year and they were a much darker brown.

Thanks for posting those images. This is another aspect worth questioning. I've seen both types pictured and identified as Inocybe calamistrata and wondered if there are two or more varieties or if insufficient identification took place.

Does anyone else have collections with decent photographs with bluing?

GC/MS / lab equipment is not required to test for psilocybin.

There are a few species close to I. calamistrata that look similar.  I. calamistratoides is one.

i can get some samples for anyone who may be interested come next september.ive been seeing these bluing inocybes a few years in a row at one of my hunting areas always around sept.some have been pretty big with intense bluing/greening running more than halfway up the stems.

Variety: Inocybe calamistrata var. calamistrata
Variety: Inocybe calamistrata var. mucidiolens
Form: Inocybe calamistrata f. calamistrata
Form: Inocybe calamistrata f. gracilis



Another important note is in the book Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. There is no official entry for Inocybe calamistrata but it's noted within Inocybe hirsuta var maxima. I quote:
"Often identified as Inocybe calamistrata, Inocybe hirsuta var. maxima is a medium to large rubust (for an Inocybe), shaggy-scaly mushroom with reddish brown coloration; the flesh, stipe and gills bruise reddish, and the base of the stipe is usually greenish blue."

Attached are specifically pages 46-50 of German Mycologist Jochen Gartz's Magic Mushrooms Around the World (no longer in print and now an artifact). It discusses the chemical analysis of multiple Inocybe species testing positive for psilocybin.

I imagine Gartz's work is not without scrutiny at the present moment.


I have ignorantly begun a koh/water 5/95 liquid drop test comparing the reactions of Psilocybe cyanescens and the Inocybe spp. collection above. After several minutes no reaction worth noting has occurred.

I'm holding off on trying my own hand and instead I've contacted Evergreen S.C. to see if they will allow me to bring in the collection for GC/MS testing in their science/chemistry department.

i have seem more bluing in the inocybe i found here .
aparently some one eat some inocybe  posible calamistrata  some weeks ago and experience the muscarine effects.
