Possible Inocybe Find... Need ID Help, Please
    #1645734 - 06/19/03 07:43 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Found these in a neighbor's lawn while walking my dog yesterday.

Here are the pics:

Closest thing I could find in my book was Inocybe geophylla, or the EarthBlade Fiberhead. What do you guys think?

Oh, and the stem was hollow. If you need to know more about them, just ask, and I will try to answer as best I can. Thanks,

RebelSteve

I was kinda thinking these might have been Psathyrella condolleana at first, but they had no veil remnants around the cap margin, and they are smaller and different shaped from previous Psath. condolleana specimens I've found. Plus I didn't think the spore print was dark enough, and there is no purplish tint to it.

Inocybe is a possibility, but most of them I've seen have conspicuously fibrillose caps, and that one doesn't look that fibrillose. Most Inocybes have a strong odor of some sort - what does this one smell like? Also, most Inocybes have gills fringed with white, so you should check that (with a magnifier if possible). Near the top of the stem, most Inocybes are pruinose (appearing to be covered with a find powder) - is this one?

Assuming it's an Inocybe, identification to species will probably require a microscope. There are a lot of species of Inocybe - many hundreds.

If it's not an Inocybe, the next possibility would probably be Pholiota. There are a number of them which grow on the ground and are smooth, not scaly. They require a microscope for identification, too.

Interesting specimen, and nice photos.

Happy mushrooming!

A picture of Inocybe aeruginascens from argentina, Chile and Germany. This is one of six psychoactive psilocybian species of Inocybe with no muscarine in them.

You got that right.

Quoting David Arora:

"...six hours' painstaking perusal of the current literature will produce the name of at least one out of 50 of the featureless little fellows instead of one out of 51, as it used to be."

The unfortunate part is that he's only joking a little.
