Everytime I am reading about another Philosopher and come across Democritus there is always sdo little about him......why?
I cant find much about Democritus anywhere.
I have read various reasons for this (Aritotles followers burned his works etc)
But there has to be more out there(in a book , on the net.. etc)
Anyone have any good links or books that I should check out????
I love Democritus and I want to read more, I know that Leucippus was his teacher so I am going to read all I can on Leucippis as well.
Anyway ......whats the deal with Democritus(he was thinking about atoms ,back when people still thought the SUN revolved around the EARTH!... you would think that would have made more of an impact then it did)
I have always been a HUGE fan of spinoza, but I assume once I get enough info on Democritus I will like him just as much.

Perhaps if you first inquire about Leucippus who was the predecesor of Democritus, as, for example, Democritus is found in the four volume set of 'The Encyclopedia of Philosophy' [Edwards, ed.] under Leucippus and Democritus.
The Greek word atomos means 'indivisible,' and the idea is an archetype, from a Jungian perspective, which as such has certainly occurred to many people from ancient times. A few, are credited with having first elaborated this idea, as is the case with most discoverers. Tesla may have had the light-bulb before Edison, and hence the idea of the light-bulb. We all know who got the credit for that one.

two things: first one of the reasons might be because he is generally talked about by other people whereas his original works have not survived well.
Second, although he determined the atom, it was nothing like the atoms we speak of today. it was a philosophical notion rather than any sort of empirical deduction
